Cost to operate a Chevy Volt
Eric Bolling (Fox Business Channel's Follow the Money) test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors.
For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine. Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery. So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles. It will take you 4 1/2 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. In a typical road trip your average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.
According to General Motors, the Volt battery hold 16 kwh of electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery.
The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I looked up what I pay for electricity.
I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh.
16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.
$18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery.
Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine only that gets 32 mpg.
$3.19 per gallon divided by 32 mpg = $0.10 per mile.
The gasoline powered car cost about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000.
So the government wants us to pay 3 times as much for a car that costs more than 7 times as much to run and takes 3 times as long to drive across country. Just sayin' >:D

Only problem here is the math....... :screwy:
Typical electrical rates are much closer to 18 cents /Kwh....
Still, don't know why you would buy an electric car.....That is NOT sustainable at all.... ;)

edit again; electric mode is for "town driving" which is where most vehicles get very very poor mileage.
The Volt exactly what it says it is. An electric car that can go on a road trip. IMHO if you lived close to work and they had a charging station (like Adobe) it would make total sense....I would not buy one to make road trips to Tahoe....Rather have a Tesla Roadster anyways.... :thumbup: :thumbup:

From what I have read it actually takes about 10 KWH to recharge the battery, the car will not allow complete depletion of the system portion of the battery (reserve for starting and computer operations.

16 kwh x $1.16 $0.16 per kwh = $2.56 to charge the battery.
$18.56 $2.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.10 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery. (but in all fairness, you would probably not be going 60MPH through town)

No offense to you GC, but this whole editorial was chocked full of bullshit..IMHO if someone is going to go through the effort to bash something maybe they should do some actual research.
I am a huge advocate for a new energy source and reducing our dependence on foreign dinosaur piss, but in all honesty, electricity does not solve too many issues....

How expensive is it when the batt needs to be replaced? How toxic is the old batt to the environment? Our military sucks up more foreign oil (across the pond)as our country gets it more local. Any hybrid getting less than 40mpg is a waste of money. They also need to get at least 350-400 miles before fill up and self charge while driving. Some diesel cars get 40-50mpg....and they can run on free used oil,trans fluid,ect..

Splitting hairs at this point, but the Cobalt was replaced by the Chevy Cruze and the base price (MSRP) for one of those is almost $17K....

I get what you are saying...But, the Volt is NOT a hybrid....
I am not defending the POS Volt, just a little frustrated that these idealistic reporters can't even get their facts straight before bashing...You have a lot more credibility when your information is correct, or in this case at least close....

I know what you are getting at!! But back in 2008 when we bought my wifes cobalt we paid 14,500 for it and it gets between 32 and 36 depending on who's driving.

OUCH ! Ya I shoulda read that a little closer. The target is just so easy I guess I got a little ahead of myself. What I do know are 3 things though. First not many people are going to sell a car that only has a 75 mile range. It wouldn't get me to work and back, and I bet I wouldn't have any A/C in it either. Second, it makes little sense to try and put everyone into an electric car when we can barely supply the electricity needs to people's homes and businesses already. The delivery system couldn't be upgraded well enough, and the government does not want to make any new electricity from coal, oil, hydro or nuclear. Seems a pity since we have so much of those resources available if the government would just unleash them. And third, if this technology was truly ready for "prime time" GM would not be the first company to produce it.
I just called my power company SCE. They tell me last month I used 13 kwh. I don't think that that is a very cheap way to run my errands, because it sure wouldn't allow me to leave town very easily.
