I know that's a great boat and well worth the $$ but a lil outta his price range for a used boat.

Sounds completely doable. Tell him not to overlook the trailer and tires. You can spend a lot on a nice boat and wind up with a pos rack under it.

any reason to limit to just jets?  there are quite a few howard, hallett, vector, etc out there with outdrives.  Also any reason for the 96+ trying to stay away from projects/restos?  A 17 year old boat could need just as much work if not more than a 25 year old boat.

my best guess would be a hallett or ultra...
