Aftermarket parts like Holley, edelbrock, etc offer the ability to tune for your exact application and any changes you may make down the road. Also the rebuild kits for them are available at just about every auto parts store that may be near you. A parts failure is the perfect opportunity to upgrade to the aftermarket.
The fuel pump your looking for is probably the Marine one with the malfunction tube that runs to the carb, right? I dont know much about the Olds motor, wonder if its the same as the BBC? An after market fuel pump (Electrical and Mechanical) for the most part will allow you to run higher pressure/volume then the stock one.
Most of us are in the habit of adding more power, which in turn will require more air/fuel. Hence, an aftermarket carb and pump. I see no real reason to replace worn out parts (For the most part) with stock original ones.

Oh yah, I have no idea what size I would need. How would I find that out? The engine is completly stock, never been rebuilt, spent most of its life in the garage. Bought from the original owner. It is a hardin marine and the valve covers say 455 olds 390 h.p.
There should be some number/letter combination somewhere on it. Havent looked at a Rochester in almost 15 years since i swapped out the tired one on my El Camino for a Edelbrock 750cfm so I dont remember where, but when you find them google will tell you alot about the parts.
