Title: Wanted: bow tank for 1975 Wriedt Maverick
Post by: mattt on May 20, 2016, 12:00:14 AM
Have a 1975 Wriedt Maverick that has been in the family since day 1.  The fiberglass tank in the bow of my boat is slowly giving up the ghost, even though it hasn't started to leak...yet.  I think the fiberglass resin is being eaten away inside the tank and making it's way thru the engine, gumming everything up.  Carb accel pump being the worst to keep clear.  I'd like to keep this boat on the water for another 30 years, but the I believe our running problems are being caused by the original fiberglass bow tank.

Anyone have an aluminum, plastic or ss tank that is a copy of the fiberglass bow tank and looking to sell it? I know I can have one made by Imco, but figured I'd put the word out beforehand in case one is available. Who else besides Imco makes tanks? Lightning is no longer making tanks, already checked.

I prefer a copy of the Wriedt bow tank so I don't have to re-plumb the whole boat, add new fillers for gunnel tanks, reconfigure sending units, etc.

I had mine made to specs for $300. Its roughly 30g. I used 1/2 marine foam between tank/diamond to cushion crawling onto it. If you plan on keeping the boat then have it made.

Where did you go to that that tank made? I've been quoted $1800 for tanks, and I though that was ridiculous.

I have to ask why you want 100 plus pounds of gas sloshing around in the front of your boat? Empty or full that's like having a big fat drunk buddy rolling around in the bow.
Get some saddle tanks. You won't have to replumb your whole boat, the fills are a piece of cake , as are the sending units. Just my nuisance,er....2 cents

Mine runs bitchn with the belly tank...Its has plates inside as well to regulate moving. But I assume you knew that an your comment was a pun.

Measure exact then take off a slight bit to ensure proper fitment...the spray foam will fill the gap an hold it along with a couple mounts.

I'd prefer to keep the tank where it was built.  I understand the downfalls of bow tank vs. saddle tanks.  With saddle tanks, I have to drill 2 holes in the gunnels for fillers.  Also have to plumb a tank equalizer setup so it pulls from both tanks equally.  Possibly second sending unit.   Then what do I do with the filler that is in the center of the bow.  I thought about it, but keeping it where it was is easier and the least disturbing to the old brown beaver.

I know this is a wanted ad, but to those of you that have converted already......is the tank a separate piece that is glassed in place under the bow?  Can I cut the tank loose from the hull bottom/stringers or is it an integral part of the hull and under bow?  I haven't even got under there yet.

Does today's fuel eat at the resin?  I ask because the fuel that is going to the carb pretty much always looks like iced tea and there is shiny, hard residue in the intake manifold under the carb.  I suspect it's the resin used in the tank?

Mine was lightly glassed on sides an bottom. I had to grind off some of the glassed on part at the bottom. Used a die grinder to cut the tank out.

Do you have pics?

I pulled the bulkhead out today.  This one is not rectangular like Your Mom's.  It is pie shaped. I can see it's glassed to the bottom hull at the back of the tank, but it's hard to see what's going on up front because the under hull clearance is almost non existent. No stringers up in the bow area like Your Mom's pics.  Is your boat a Wriedt?

I will get some pics tomorrow when I get back to my shop. If memory serves me well, the tank I have is from the identical boat, a wreidt Maverick.

Someone changed it to this aluminum tank shortly before imparted out the boat.

Ok, that sounds good.  Here is a pic of the top/back of the tank that I got when I was crammed under the dash.  Not the best pic, but it kinda shows what's up down there.  There is another piece of plywood that appears to be glass'd in behind the tank that the bulkhead was up against.  That will have to come out too to get the tank out of the bow.  I can see where it's glassed to the hull bottom at the back of the tank.  What I can't see is if the tank is glass'd in at the front of the tank.

Have you checked out Moeller?

Been using them for years,  cheap, ready made,  covered by NMMA, USCG and UL.

I've seen it online but not in person.  How do you secure it to the hull bottom?  Existing tank is glassed in place.

They have mount kits for like $25. Basically aluminium clamps that get screwed to the deck.

I picked up a pair of saddle tanks, but they're too wide to fit between the inside of the hull and the seats/interior.

Still looking for a tank or tanks.

Anyone have a formula or calculator to convert dimensions of a saddle tank into liquid gallons?   I picked up a pair of saddle/gunnel tanks but they are waaaay too long to work with the interior in my boat.  If I shorten then, I'd like to see fuel capacity now and after shortening them.

Still open to other suggestions for a tank or tanks.

Someone in the know told me to look for a pair of gunnel tanks that came out of a "Southwind" jet boat.  He claims the dimensions are nearly the same between a Southwind lower hull and a Wriedt lower hull.   Can anyone confirm that?

Multiply cubic inches by 231

1 US gallon is 231 cubic inches

Thanks for the calculator and formula for converting.  It looks like the formula is divide by 231, not multiply.  The saddle tank I have is 3066 cubic inches, 73" x 6" x 7", and around 13 gallons makes sense.

Yep, x 90% usable. 11.94 gals. (12 gals is close enough)

I looked more into the Moeller plastic tank for it's simplicity.  Unfortunately, the bow tank is 12" tall, and I don't think it will fit under the bow since the existing tank is 10" tall and was a snug fit with the reinforcement ribs on the bottom side of the deck.  Is there any other plastic tank mfg, or perhaps another tank from Moeller that I could have missed?

Thanks.  You wouldn't happen to have any pics or info from those tanks would you?  I'd love to see how they were set up.   Were they behind the seat upholstery, or were they all the way back, next to the engine against the side of the hull?  Without putting a tape on it, I'd say there is 3 to 4 feet of length between the transom and where the interior starts for the rear seats.  Since I've never had saddle/gunwale tanks, I'm not sure where the correct placement of them should be???

All the way back against the transom or mid-ship behind the interior?

I can see saddle/gunwale tanks completely changing the handling of this boat.  With a full tank of gas up in the bow, you know it and slow down for big wakes.  Did your boat still feel planted in the water without all that extra weight up front?
Thanks in advance.

Hard to tell in these pics (best I have on me) but the tanks started right in front of the fill caps and ran all the way to the stern and sat against the back wall of the transom and under the lip of the hull. I was able to put upholstery side panels that ran straight up and down to cover them up.
For the size of boat the ride was pretty nice I think having most your weight toward the back is a thousand times better than up front. All mine needed was a place diverter to get some trim out of it but never got that far.
I'll do some searching I know somewhere I have to have pics of the tanks with no interior in the boat.

Thank you.  I see above you mentioned 15g aluminum tanks in there.  Interesting that a model year later, Wriedt switched to alum tanks away from fiberglass.  Makes me wonder if whoever in your family ordered the boat made that special request when it was built.  I know ours was bought off the lot in Norwalk, already completed/built.  I grew up in this boat....I'm 46 now, so the "Brown Beaver" has been around a while.

Would you happen to remember if the tanks were round/spun or the more trapezoidal shape that I run across regularly?  Also, were they glassed into the hull if you know?  Your post is swaying me to trying this vs. replacing the bow tank.  In rough water with a full tank of gas, it was a hard ride.

BTW, what was under the bow, nothing?  Was there still a kick board closing the bow off or was it open on yours?  Thanks a million for all the posts!   8)

The tanks in mine were shaped just like the drawing bahner80 just posted. They were glassed in but originally they I believe were bolted somehow. I just remember my uncle's saying something about them coming loose and that's when they glassed them in.
It was my uncle's boat originally and he had all the paperwork from the factory that would probably answer a lot of questions but unfortunately I never got a hold of that stuff and he passed a couple years ago. I got the original titles and a lot of stories lol. Most my family that I grew up with going to the river has passed on so between that and my house taking a lot of priority pushed me to sell it and move on.
The bow was just open I used it for storage and yes there was a small kickboard or divider that ran across the boat right under the dash. Made it nice to have nothing run at you while trying to plain out.

I tried looking for it and came up empty.  I saw an ad for a Maverick hull with trailer and Dodge truck, but no tank mentioned in that ad.   Was the tank aluminum?  Thanks in advance.

Did you see it on Craigslist?  Can you put me in touch with the guy?  If it was fiberglass, wouldn't it be eaten up by gas anyway?  Thanks.
