Post by: Brad @ SCJB on October 03, 2009, 04:11:05 PM
Lookin for a Holley Dominator 1150 list number 9377

found a few on ebay and racing junk, but nothing im impressed with. seems people who have these thing they are worth their weight in gold even if they look to be 30+ years old.....when a new one is like $850  :screwy:

so im lookin for one that is 1/2 way decent lookin and doesnt look like it spent its life in a bucket of salt water, but doesnt cost a fortune.

I had a line on a perfect one, but now that I got cash, it sold   :-\

yeah, ive seen that one....it looks like its spent its life in a bucket of salt water.

i know it sounds picky, but if the outside looks like that, i cant imagine what the inside looks like. its obvious the carb wasnt maintained.

Maybe cuz the 1150 Dominator still utilizes a 2" throttle blade with a larger 1.830" venturi, meening it has very little(virtualy no) taper when compared to a 1050 or 1250 (which has a 2.125" throttle blade and 1.88" venturi).  This means off idle and acceleration may suffer.  Most worked over 1050 will flow 1100+CFM, but aftermarket Carburetor manufactures choose not to rate their carburetors in actual CFM, much like a sterio amplifier.  Not sayin these don't work, because they obviously do and have thier place, but on a N/A deal given the opportunity I would choose either a 1050 based Dom over the 1150 and if you need more than that go for the 12 or start looking for a pair of something. The 1150 IMO is best suited for a Supercharger app.  my.02

I'm kinda suprised no one has mentioned 2 circut vs 3 circut. I thought the 3 circut carbs were considered "race" because they were designed to be fat at idle, and on the lean side at wot.  Or some chit like that.. :-\

What Josh said  ;D
The only reason the conversation even came up was because we were talking about the 600+inch motor he was building and that he was going with a 1050.

900ish hp at low RPM (5kish)
If he was gonna spin it real hard , he would opt for the 1250 .
Once again, I'm just sayin  :sly:

hey brad, I know a guy who has one, its not being used at the moment, but its been gone thru and is more like a 1250 now. Ported venturi's. larger needle and seat etc. Im pretty sure he still has it and it worked great when he used it. Plus it doesnt look like salf water was used as the primary fuel lol. let me know if ur interested.

Ok, all the expert opinions and advice aside, I know 2 things...

1-The Pink Whore C/J 812 ran like a raped ape with an 1150 on it. Need proof? Go watch some You Tube.

2- The Crazy Eights C/J 888 ran like a raped ape both at the Big River trip and @ the Long Beach race with an 1150 con it. Need proof? Again, see You Tube.

Brad bought the carb, it's an 1150 in brand new condition, he scored on the price, it's going to make his boat run like teh previously mentioned raped ape.

Thank you

I'm just throwing this out there because I feel left out of the peeing for distance contest... ;D

The 1150 is an excellent carb for it's intended purpose, to run balls out with little throttle response needs...

We ran an 1150 on a real healthy 427 in a river boat, our driver could drive the snot out of it, but I could not....It simply just did not have the EFI like pick up I was used to. I really liked the 1050 and could get the boat settled down and them hammer the hell out of it without issues, no stumble, hickup or fart...Never saw any difference in WOT RPM  :-\

The simple fact that our driver ended up dropping time off of practice legs led me to believe he liked it too...

Now all that being said, if B rad can figure out how to keep the throttle blades nearly WFO, it will work badass....

If you drive like a girl, like me, you will hate it...It's almost like having a time delay...Me no likey....

I was very fortunate to have a good freind blow their engine to smitherenes several years ago, it literally doubled our test parts...we even used his drivers seat   :sly: (Thanks Joel  )

"Drag Race only" has to do with the orientation of the floats in the bowl, a drag race carb could not handle the pounding of a CJ IMHO, it could flood and have all sorts of float level woes...An offroad HP carb typically has sprung floats for stability....

i already bought the QFT 1150....its brand new, never even mounted for mock up. I got it for less then what you can get a new 1050 for. I just  couldnt pass up the deal.....and balls out is what we do in comp jet. If theres probs with the floats, they arent hard to replace.

im not a fan of fedex anymore.

the carb i ordered was supposed to be delivered thursday....then they pushed it back till friday.....then it took them over 24 hours to transport it from phx to vegas so it didnt make the friday delivery.

so they attempt to deliver today.....signature required....no one was home for 30 minutes and of course they tried to deliver it then.

so i called fedex to see if i can pick it up. turns out they use some outside contracted company do deliver their 'home delivery'. there is no way to contact them to make a re-delivery attempt and they only work tues-sat....so they wont even retry to deliver it until tuesday....WHEN IM NOT HOME.

i used to pick fedex over ups all the time....shipping prices were better and they shipped from coast to coast in days, not weeks. but this shenanigan is BS.

sorry, i had to vent.
