OK i might make some people out there upset but that is not my intention...  First, I thought Long beach was fantastic I was even interested in the kids and their 15hp hydros.  At first I thought two classes of jets was fantastic and I was glad to see Ralph out there again. but the boat count was disappointing. 5&3... 8 for one class would have looked a lot better to the fans. I know, I know the river racer boats would not be competitive, and it's good to have a vintage class to get more people out and racing, but the appearance was unimpressive and I might say tacky.  Seeing tired looking old boats running no faster than the slowest classes on the water does not foster a good impression.  Comp Jet had some great racing going on and the inboards I must say certainly out shined all the whackers.  But anyone who came into the pits and looked the boats over surely would not be impressed with the jets.  The one boat that did show some technology was Ball-n-Jack but even that hull was showing some real wear and tear. SS & SC not to mention KRR all those boats looked immaculate.  I know it's a burden and I know it's expensive but for next year it would be great to see all the jets com out with nice paint, hardware, and team uniforms.  I know there is no monetary reward for boat racing and I know that many are on incredibly tight budgets but the word I hear out by the beach is the jets are a joke.  That hurts, for I love jets, more than all other types of boat racing. I want it to grow and I want it to not just become better, I want it to be the best show on the beach.

For those who raced, I congratulate you. For those who came to cheer I commend you.  But for the class I challenge you to become the most professional class in racing. Be the class that people aspire to not the class people put up with.  I open the gauntlet let the slings and arrows begin...

While I totally understand where you are coming from, your statement is both misguided and totally out of context.

Let me start by saying that the CJ123 while awesome to watch and runs like a scared rabbit, in order for someone to be competitive against them will really have to bring their A game, not to mention spend a ballistic shorts load of money. I do not advocate, nor believe in, racing cash.

This is the main reason for low boat counts. Not every swinging hot link can spend tens of thousands of hard earned dollars to risk getting hurt to win a trophy and have some bragging rights.

The River Racer class is a chance for the average schmo to get out there, get your feet wet and have more fun than a box of puppies.

I personally think, observing the crowd, that the comp jets and the river racers were definately a fan favorite. Now imagine a full field. It would be off the hook...

It takes a lot of sand and little bit of investment to do what these guys dud this weekend and I take a personal offense to your comments.

If you will excuse me now, I have to complete my 5 and a half hour drive home....

I gotta say that I don't agree with those sentiments at all wizard.  People have to start somewhere, every sort of racing has to have entry level classes, and with that comes worn looking equipment.  I race a 40 yr old dirtbike and she has never been a garage queen.  No bux up team would want to run my ride when they can ride a cutting edge Jap mx bike.  But people love to see us struggle in comparison to the modern bikes.  The crowd is always cheering us loudly.  We are loud, unreliable, and more than a little rough around the edges, compared to the new tech teams.

If you didn't walk thru the pits, you wouldn't even notice the condition of the paint on the RR boats and tow vehicles.  T-shirts for the peeps in the pits? Maybe.  But u iforms inthe entry level classes?  C'mon now, this is a very expensive form of sporfsman raci g already.  You said you enjoyed the kids classes . . . the level of some of those boats is like 7th grade shop class.  A race of this type with 5 boats is plenty competitive and fun to watch.  8 jets at Long Beach is bordering on unsafe imo.  I just hope a few morepeople would have watched the race and left thinkin g "Hey, maybe I could take my old boat and go racing" inztead of "Gee I wish I could afford to spend $30K to go racing for a half dozen races."   Again just the opinion of one family of vintage racing's opinion.

I understand your disappointment in my comments and it hurt me that I made them, but these were the impressions I was given today not by me but from what I saw.  Like I said I do understand what challenges the class has. What I'm suggesting is that for the jets and powerboat racing in general to succeed, a more visually professional appearance will go a long way in promoting the class as well as the sport.  The racing was fine today, great in places.  But I hope for  the growth of the class the visual impression will equal the race so more will be drawn to it.

You say my comments were misguided and totally out of context.  I did not misguide my comments.  I focused them on this site because I wanted it directed to the racers not a bunch of hacks with a bunch of BS to complain about.  They are not out of context because context is the issue.  Professional Motorsports has come a long way over the years and the only way for boat racing to grow in this day and age is for people to support it.  People mean money and if money has a choice it flows to organizations or events that present an image that  money wants to be associated with.  Like it or not our beloved sport cannot survive without it.

After I left boat racing I got into 1/4 scale RC cars to keep my competitive juices going and to have some fun.  After a year I was doing just that.  At one race I was motoring around the track and plowed into another car.  After the race the driver's dad ( the kid was about 14) chewed me a knew one for not taking it seriously.  I was speechless, stunned and a little emotional at his comments. It was then that I realized he was absolutely right.  I changed my attitude, my appearance, my commitment to the sport.  I started writing articles supporting 1/4 scale in national magazines, I dressed better at races, I carried myself better, my car looked a hell of a lot better and one year later I was Western Regional High Points Champ, Super-Nationals Champ, and recognized for my contributions to the sport. That continued till I left the sport three years later.

Moral of the story; Not only will the individual improve himself but he will improve what he loves.

Let me try to be that 14 year old's dad...

You have applaud Cyclone and R&D for taking the time and the money to make sure tha there teams are up and running and present them in the manor you suggest, with that example the rest can follow suit. I saw So Cal there ready to help at any time and I saw people come by the boats just ask questions, there were answered by the drivers and crews with the utmost courtesy.

It's comments like that wiz that scare off guys with a low budget build boat that want to get into racing.

No one wants to hear their stuff is ugly in the pits, especially after hours of work and hundreds of dollars spent to get them there. Takes money to make money and last I checked most racers don't have full paid sponsorships from big name corps. It's all about getting in there and having a good time, and as more people do that more attention will be brought to the sport and help the growth of it.

So i take it the next race ill be seeing your fresh out the mold, brand new hardware no expense spared boat with a CJ or RR numbers painted on?

I don't think so, maybe that's why the class isn't growing. Everyone is saving up to have a race boat like you expect?

Not trying to start a pissing for distance contest, but you challenged me, now I am going to debate why you are speaking out of term.

OK i might make some people out there upset but that is not my intention...

If you don't have something positive to say....... ;)

First, I thought Long beach was fantastic I was even interested in the kids and their 15hp hydros.

This is what the RRJ class is all about. It is those kids that longed to race a 15HP hydro as a youngster and simply never had that chance. Now that they/we have hit our 40's and more, this would be the opportunity to do just that. This is where you are completely out of context and you contradicted yourself the rest of the way through the post.

At first I thought two classes of jets was fantastic and I was glad to see Ralph out there again. but the boat count was disappointing. 5&3... 8 for one class would have looked a lot better to the fans.

Boat counts as I have come to figure out over the last several years is a moving target that has no formula for knowing what to expect. The economy has a lot to do with it (maybe even everything) so to have an entry level class that you can literally go home, rip the interior out of your family cruiser, get a good tune in it, buy/borrow some safety equipment and go fulfill that childhood dream, that's huge IMHO.

I know, I know the river racer boats would not be competitive, and it's good to have a vintage class to get more people out and racing, but the appearance was unimpressive and I might say tacky.

How many RRJ races do you think have been held? Of course the class size was small. slideartist came all the way down from San Francisco to compete. It's funny but I don't remember seeing your boat out there.... :sly:

Seeing tired looking old boats running no faster than the slowest classes on the water does not foster a good impression.

The class has a speed limit of 80 MPH, there are quite a few reasons for it, I will be brief. It levels the playing field out by not having a 1500 HP blown monster out there taking all the wins. If you break out of the speed, you better hope you do it by over 100MPH, because you will be penalized one lap for speeding.

The safety equipment becomes a little bit less of an issue because you are limited by 80 MPH, not how fast the boat can go, it makes sure the novice driver (no offense intended) do overdrive the boat and get hurt, or hurt someone else. It makes for some really exciting gunwale to gunwale racing that IMHO was only seen in the K boats. Your wrong, it was very exciting to watch, add a couple more boats and you have something special....

Comp Jet had some great racing going on and the inboards I must say certainly out shined all the whackers.

So you pick on the jets and not the lack luster outboards, funny, but I heard way more cheering for the jets than I did any single whacker race.

But anyone who came into the pits and looked the boats over surely would not be impressed with the jets.

Disagree an every level. These are home spun, build it on a budget with parts found in a wrecking yard, 1970's boats that have been enjoyed for decades as a family pleasure boat. You simply cannot get more grass roots than that....... You think the PS 70 started life as a ski boat?

The one boat that did show some technology was Ball-n-Jack but even that hull was showing some real wear and tear. SS & SC not to mention KRR all those boats looked immaculate.

You are comparing apples to pineapples. Did you see some of the names on those boats? Do you think those guys are sitting in the garage with a Bud Light in one hand building there own engine from a 1979 Suburban?, come on..... These guys race virtually every event, not because they want to, they need to keep the sponsors happy and get some face time with the fans.  I didn't see a lot of sponsor names on the jets.... Except one... You figure out which one.

I know it's a burden and I know it's expensive but for next year it would be great to see all the jets com out with nice paint, hardware, and team uniforms.

A nice uniform shirt costs about $45 per crew member, each member should have two, are going to sponsor them?  :screwy:

I know there is no monetary reward for boat racing and I know that many are on incredibly tight budgets but the word I hear out by the beach is the jets are a joke.

The jets are entertaining, relatively inexpensive, plentiful, and at some point almost all of the fans you are talking about have either owned one, driven one or know someone that had/has one.... Can you say the same about a blown flat? Betting no.

That hurts, for I love jets, more than all other types of boat racing. I want it to grow and I want it to not just become better, I want it to be the best show on the beach.

In case you have not noticed, the jets had a crazy strong showing with only 8 boats... Trust me on this, it's growing, we just need a few more nay sayers to commit to it, once the boat count goes up, betting you will start to see a little more pint and polish.

All they need is a little support from places like this forum and it might just spread like wildfire. Christian is a true testament to what can be accomplished if you just apply yourselves, the support the the Comp Jet guys (all of them) and the other River Racer teams and even some of the crew members of the GN50..... I guarantee you that does not happen too often in the other classes...

For those who raced, I congratulate you. For those who came to cheer I commend you.  But for the class I challenge you to become the most professional class in racing. Be the class that people aspire to not the class people put up with.  I open the gauntlet let the slings and arrows begin...

Hope you don't think I'm done. :sly:

I understand your disappointment in my comments and it hurt me that I made them, but these were the impressions I was given today not by me but from what I saw.

You must have been seated near some $180,000 motor homes.  :sly:

Like I said I do understand what challenges the class has. What I'm suggesting is that for the jets and powerboat racing in general to succeed, a more visually professional appearance will go a long way in promoting the class as well as the sport.  The racing was fine today, great in places.  But I hope for  the growth of the class the visual impression will equal the race so more will be drawn to it.

I see the point your making, don't think for a second I don't. Here is the real deal, flame away if you want to...

A dude in the pits with either a Comp Jet tee shirt, or a dude with a uniform tee shirt like Cyclone Speed and Marine or R&D is WAY more approachable than the dudes, say, from the CJ123 crew that had on the nice "sponsor supplied" inform shirts... Guess who most of the spectators and potentially future jet boat competitors were talking to? Here's a hint, it was not the fastest guys there  ;)... The perfect uniform IMHO is one that a future boat racer could see themselves wearing..

You say my comments were misguided and totally out of context.  I did not misguide my comments.  I focused them on this site because I wanted it directed to the racers not a bunch of hacks with a bunch of BS to complain about.  They are not out of context because context is the issue.

Misguided because you want to make Comp Jet like Pro Stock.... Don't hold your breath.
Out of context because you are saying in one sentence that the comp guys seemed unprofessional, yet you dis the outboard guys in the same paragraph.

Which were worse, OB or Comp Jet? I didn't see an outboard spin in a turn, recover, then run the leader back down...... That right there is entertainment at it's finest... Or are you one of those guys that likes to watch everybody chase Ty Newton for a second place podium, if it weren't for a sea bird, he would have swept the event in two categories, it's like watching Jimmy Johnson all over again, the jets are like watching dirt ovals, not a restrictor plate super speedway. And frankly, I like it.

Professional Motorsports has come a long way over the years and the only way for boat racing to grow in this day and age is for people to support it.  People mean money and if money has a choice it flows to organizations or events that present an image that  money wants to be associated with.  Like it or not our beloved sport cannot survive without it.

When did anyone ever call jet boat racing a professional sport? No offense to anyone out there racing, but I don't think anybody in the jet boat scene got paid to be there this weekend.....  :-\

If you can't have fun and relax while doing something you love, you have no business being there.... Just a thought. I hate the spoiled little snotbags that think they are better than me and I think that is what started turning me off at the Whitewater Marathon racing scene, it went from run what you brung to 1800HP helicopter turbines in a $40,000 aluminum tunnel hull capable of speeds in the 160MPH range.... I love it, but NOT going to die doing it.

Good for you, Comp Jet, River Racer Jet and stock hydro are those stepping stones, You want to get more serious, you can "Advance" to a faster class, then you can wear a full on sponsor supplied uniform.

Moral of the story; Not only will the individual improve himself but he will improve what he loves.

Fair enough, can't argue that. I am just afraid it will make the participants less approachable and there would be no chance of the sport gaining in popularity. I think humble is key here.

Let me try to be that 14 year old's dad...

Life is too short to to worry about what others think about you, i would have told that fugger to pound sand.  ;)

This is exactly what I am talking about.... How many guys from the 123 crew chatted you up? just curious, no offense to them at all....

I can say this, being there all weekend long, I can tell you who had more fun just by watching the crews in the pits. Don't get me wrong, there was drama, but it had more to do with mismatched boats and frustration for an uneven playing field than anything else.

Well then I think mr wizard should try and build a boat himself fund it on a budget with professional team shirts and pit shirts and a shiny polished new hull and capable of at least finishing a heat to boot and actually doing it all by his selfish self and see how far you get in the pits before someone tell you where to shove it 😜. I've pitted for most and have had sleepless nights just to helps out friends and buds get there and this ass hat has to come in and bash are class go prove us wrong. Or don't support this class jack ass. And yes I'm the tattooed ugly fuck working theses non professional old ugly boats your talking trash about come bye and have a beer some time 😘

Amen bro. He was probably swinging on the sponsored boat from the mpd crew no offense jack Dave Tom etc etc but not all those who race have the knowledge and hook ups like them. Catch any of those guys in the right time they will share there knowledge just like terry Harold jim and the rest. R&d boys run what they bring Terry's boat turns hard as hell matt proved that rubbing the bouys very lap. It's all about the having fun helping each other out and enjoying some racing. Pretty much all the peeps in CJ will help each other out even between heats just a little pissed that some one can say there disappointed yet hasn't helped or been part of the program to know what it takes just race

Woe there guys your taking my comments way to hard this was suppose to be constructive criticism not a bashing.  Like I said I know where your coming from. We started with a family ski boat too and we were younger than a box of puppies.  But at the end of our careers in the racing game we all worked in racing shops, and we had uniforms (not from a sponsor but actually matching Dickies pants, Vans deck shoes, and silkscreened bowling shirts (one each) that my mom retrofitted into team uniforms.  My rig was not anodized but it was finely scotch brighted and the hull was always clean and polished.  We acted like kids after the races but we helped anyone that needed it (just ask Mr. Bruce). I tend to agree with you that River Racer sort of falls outside this discussion since it's premise is that the boats come straight from the family garage. But the stuff we did 35 years ago was not a game changer due to cost.  Cleaning up our act helped the team and the image we presented.  This got us sponsors like Premier Helmets, Amsoil, Berkley, Hondo, Drake Engineering, Eliminator, plus the shops we worked for.  That little bit of work made substantial contributions to the racing and in turn our success.  As far as putting my own boat together on a shoe string I did that. Built my own engine rigged it with a drill motor, band saw, and Sears grinder. At the age of 23.  Eliminator discounted my hull without any stipulations on what we did as long as we didn't splash the hull because they knew we would represent Eliminator well. As far as doing it today I am using the same concepts in starting the Engineering Design Academy @ Century High School.  As a new teacher I am awakening kids who may become your competition in the future. Our projects include a radio controlled rocket car, a Solar charged Electric race car and I hope someday new boat designs. I'm doing this the same way we did so long ago buy looking good, doing it right and getting support that will supply materials, cash, and education to the next generation of engineers.  Please don't be so hard on me I didn't mean to be so hard on the class.

Woe there guys your taking my comments way to hard this was suppose to be constructive criticism not a bashing.  Like I said I know where your coming from. I appreciate your taking the time... However, it is obvious you did NOT walk through the pit areas.

Most of the CJ teams had either matching tee shirts or a uniform of some sort.

You are correct, the boats are not as nice as the PS or SS boats, with their hose and belt budget I could build a running jetboat.... (jk)..

However, going to tell you something my late grandad told me when I was a youngster...

"Be careful what you say, how you say it and to whom you say it to"...

You my friend struck a nerve.    :sly:

I think somewhere in all this we find common ground.  I understand what your grandad taught you.  I probably came on a bit (maybe a lot) too strong on my first post.  I was just trying to suggest where the class, which is developing nicely, needs to grow into.  Where we were is where your heading.  About the time we moved on to our lifetime careers was the time we were thinking the sport was on the verge of major sponsors, TV coverage and dreaming it was to become the next USAC.  That didn't happen and maybe we were partially to blame since we left the sport when we did. Who knows... NASCAR should have been APBA on FOX today.  I hope next time we see each other we can shake hands and agree to disagree if need be but remain passionate about our beloved Jets. Have fun, race hard, (look good doing it)

I tried very hard to not jump down your throat.

You have to understand that the CJ guys try very hard to make a fairly professional presentation, but at the same time, they have to have fun and keep costs under control.

It is supposed to be fun. If fun is not had, there is absolutely no reason to do it at all. If keeping it fun means being relaxed and not sweating some stuff too much, then so be it. Jet boats get the living crap beat out of them, for what they put those poor old boats through I am surprised at how good most of them look.

So to have someone saying that they looked ragged and used up pissed me off.

I tend to get too passionate about some things at times (shocker huh?) but don't take it personally, I felt you were backing the guys in a corner unjustly.

You may have to eat a bucket load of Humble Pie if wizard's boat does get built, cuz it is bad ass.

@Wizard  Thanks for posting a bit about your background too,, it is clear you have a tremendous passion for the sport, and that you have some real positive concrete steps that people should certainly paused a bit to consider.

so then step up and race or join the organization and see where you stand with this professional team shirt shit actions speek louder than words and if your implying that we need to act more professional at the track and present trophy queens instead of race boats come out and show us how its done and yeah you struck a nerveas a class we grow as a family not a who has more money and fancy team shirt shit we all help each other out and share a common interest to bust are asss during are normal week but come race day find the coin ro go racing and have fun with extende friends and family. i for one donate long days and nights to help these guys out so they can race wehether it be with fuel last minute trashing on a boat just so they can fullfill some good old racing and good times with friends and still balance normal finances and life as we live. i vote that you show up and show us all how it should be done and if its about the money the way you speak it shouldnt be a problem i look forward to seeing your pile of shit run with this so called non shiny old run down boats and team jersey  :banghead:

Just to lay some number out there, custom t-shirts cost about $3.50 each. Not shitty quality either. Food for though if anyone wants some team shirts.
