my buddy had intentions to run nos class in his hallett "mountain duck"...but since his accident last month, i dont see him doing "anything " for a while......

I have an interest in running NJ at the end of this month. I need to know if my boat would qualify to run. It is an '85 Baker tunnel jet. It does not have full length stringers but the tunnels act like twin 'I' beams and make the hull very rigid and stiff. The four verticle sides of the tunnels are full length and act like stringers. Also, lots of bulkheads in the deck. The seats are bolted to the floor which is the top of the tunnels. The engine is an LS6 Corvette, 346 cid. The boat runs 70+ mph on GPS. If I can get an approval on this boat I will add a kill switch, diverter lock out and what ever else is needed. How about it?

I am an ex Comp Jet driver from Region 18 (Utah) from the '80's and would like to do some more racing.

I will attempt to post pic's to this response. The engine stringers end at the front of the engine. In addition to the engine stringers there are additional structural stringers that are laminated to the inside of the tunnels that look to be 1" thick X 4" high and they run from the transom all the way to the footboard bulkhead. These also provide support for the sub floor in the center pod. Except in the engine well, these are covered by carpet and the sub floor. You can feel them through the carpet and they form a bulge that you can see all the way forward. You can see this in the pic's if I did the attachments correct.

Boat looks great. The pictures were helpful. NJ is suppose to run under the same rules as CJ. The only question i have is on the seat bolting. It must be thru bolted to the stringers or the floor of the boat ( not sub floor).,and we must be able to visually inspect it. Is this possible.

The current seat attachment is as follows:

There is a large seat bottom sized wood doubler that is glassed onto the top of the tunnels under each seat. This is probably half inch plywood covered with glass. There are four quarter inch bolts coming up out of the doubler which the seat is bolted to with large area washers. I don't think these bolts go all the way through the floor, just the doubler. I will crawl under the boat tomorrow and check this out. I will also provide pic's of the seat attachment. This is a very sturdy seat mount but you will have to tell me if it is sufficient.

Thanks for the comments, the engine is a heads and cam Corvette LS6, 346 cid, making around 480 hp at its peak (can't get there with the jet tho). It is not a 427 LS7. I may drop a large displacement LS motor in the boat but I wanted to prove the computer managed concept first...

Terry is one of the guys that will be inspecting your boat at the races...a 1/4 inch bolt i dont think would be sufficient enough...technically the seat is supposed to be mounted to the stringer...but being it is a tunnel if the bolts going through the tunnel and bottom of your boat...that would most likely fly...although terry would know

after talking with the IE commissioner and another committee member we agree that you can race your tunnel in NJ. An inspection will be done prior to the race . Our main goal is to make sure that the boat is safe for both the driver and the other racers.

Really hope you can make it out and there is a NJ class. Ive been very interested in the computer controlled LS stuff for awhile. I really think it could be a competative package after a little R&D (research and developement NOT the Bruces) work.

That sounds great, I'm looking forward to participating in the event... Now, where can I find more info, such as early registration, schedules and rules. Do you have enough boats to make an NJ class? I'd be interested to know what the competition looks like. I expect I will filling out the back spaces but I'd like to know how much enthusiasm there is for this class..

We need 4 boats to run a NJ Jet race. They are on the sanction . If we do not have 4 boats it could be combined with the Nostalgia Endurance race. I do know that they have 3 boats that are suppose to be there.As for the sanction it is posted on APBA-racing . com

I haven't been on the boards much, but I hope to run Nostalgia Jet after the thanksgiving race. I have real interest and my boat meets all the rules, I just have a sand drag event thanksgiving so I couldn't make it.

I've been trying to focus more on projects and less on the internet. I figured I would get the Hondo done then update my thread, and get back to chatting on the boating forums and enjoying the water.... guess it's taking longer than I thought

Regarding tunnel boats like MrEracers, the tunnels really are the stringers correct?
As far as fastening the seat base. Through bolted to a wood base which was glassed in at the factory sounds very secure. Would this just require a visual inspection for the quality of the glass job or would he be required to bring some bolts through from the bottom?

The rules state full length "stringers". I would say glassed in seat boxes don't count as full length stringers. That's why I hate those types of rules. Give me a load factor to meet or a allowable bending stress or sheer value to pass. Otherwise tunnels need full length stringers and the seats end up six inches higher than they should be. It does allow for sponsor logos on your drivers suit to be seen from the beach though.

Personally, I have expressed this from day one since the full stringer rule came into its initial talking stages - the rule should only be applied to comp jet. NJ should not have to take on this rule. It was not the intention of it. I don't know where this got lost and decided it should be crossed over, but it shouldn't have. Just as NJ is an "open motor" class. it should be a "open hull" class as well.

Since NJ is considered a local class the powers to be have stated that NJ will follow CJ rules as to the stringers,seats and rudder.( safety Issues) I will get with them and see if we can't work on the rules to allow more boats to qualify, with safety inspections before the boats are allowed to race. If there is real interest in this class I am willing to do what I can. I would love to see this class make a come back as i feel it will help new CJ drivers get add'l seat time.
