78 Miller First Boat
« on: August 04, 2015, 12:51:16 AM »
Hey everyone, this is a 1978 Miller 454 BBC Berkley. Pics are just cell phone. Below is the story of getting and owning this boat for all of 2 days now. Plus some about me.

My career is a boat mechanic in the Parker/Havasu area. I love working on boats and see myself doing it for a long time. I have the knowledge and the tools (most are Matco) to keep doing what I am. I always get to work on the customers boat, or go out on my friends or family boat. I have wanted my own boat for as long as I can remember it was going to be a small jet boat. Now this isn't exactly what I was looking for but the deal was good and I had the cash to get it. It's so close to what I envisioned I just couldn't say no. I wanted more square back (stern), a 460 BBF, over the transom exhaust, a droop snoot/diverter setup, and a hull with more then 1/4 stringer.

Well thru some good fortune and a ton of help from my friend I purchased this. The things that bothered me: Chevy, meh, at least its not a olds. Snoot/diverter not on it, I can get it. The back of the hull looks good. Its full stringer which is awesome, and the exhaust can be capped and i can do over the transom. So after getting it, checking the oil and putting gas in (20 gals, EEP! hittin' every gas station) and running it on a hose we take it to That Beach and give it a go. Plug in, check. Floats and doesn't take on water, check. Bilge pump test check good. Start and adjust carb after warm up, check. Jet pushes on trailer, check. Shifter and throttle attached checked and working. Off the trailer and out I go to test to see if it will go. YAAA BOY for about 30 seconds until my hat flies off. Throttle back, check for boaters behind and to the side to flip around for it, and i stab the throttle for a go fast corner. Boat wont move, NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I look back giving the foot throttle action and see the throttle at carb is not moving, first thought is broken cable after sitting so long. Idle back to shore and i try the gas again, nothing but i do notice.... the throttle plate pulled out of the floor not letting the cable to move but letting me think i was pushing the throttle. Back on the trailer and home I go now knowing its gonna move and its gonna be quick but I have some things to fix.

Get the boat home and I decide what the plan of action is. First go the stores for all the necessary boat and trailer equipment. List will be done tomorrow when I have more time. Purchase was saturday, test and shopping sunday, and tear down inspection today. This boat has to be Good to Go for this weekend. No particular reason its just that first trip itch lol. So with needing to know what the sub floor looks like for throttle repair and the carpet being basically powder and smelling of animal my friend and I pull the seats ((they need to be replaced soon but will work with towels), all new hardware will be necessary for reattachment). All the seats and carpet out, oil changed, debris swept out of boat its time for the pressure washer. First the inside to get all the dirt and carpet glue off and out. What a mess it was.

With the washing the inside done, I check it over. Damage (probably from anchor) on the stringer by driver seat, the sub floor has been screwed and fixed more then once, the battery platform needs redone, and a piece of fiberglass resin has come loose. Otherwise it looks great. I will fix the sub floor and the resin that has come off but leave the damage on the stringer for now. I have time in the winter to fix stuff. Right now my girl and I want to boat but powdery carpet and throttle had to be fixed. Well in the process of taking the throttle apart to get the cable out to buy a new one, the ugly monster known as corrosion reared its head and the foot throttle is not usable. No biggy we already found a new one (picking it up on wednesday) and the cable I am getting from work. Replace that, more securely mount the shifter, remount the seats with that new hardware I mentioned and I am on the water this weekend.

There is 5 stress cracks on the top section some as small as 1/2 dollar and another about 6" round. And 2 bigger chips I will fix. I will deal with the stress cracks at a later date. No big deal. Well I will let everyone know tomorrow what all I purchased and will purchase. What my plans are for this other then what I mentioned. And more pics as I go along. If you read all that awesome. Thanks.

Let me know what you think and any other Miller owners in L.H.C. area want to go out this weekend. Well as long as everything goes as planned.

Nice boat and good story. I hope everything goes good with fixing it. Prepare to never hear the end of it from the Chevy guys about that ford comment haha.

You did well for your first boat, Miller's are great. Everything you're working on sounds about right for a 78'. One recommendation since you're in Havasu is checking out Peterson Marine for your pump needs. He just pulled the pump out of my Rogers and is working it over. Cool guy and his stuff is super sano.

Thanks for all the awesome support and advice! More updates on what is going on and pics.

Well another day after work catering to the boat. I didn't want this thing sitting outside anymore now that it is mine but the garage was a disaster.

So out comes all the junk along with the bronco. After getting everything out I have a BBQ dinner with my friends here and its time to reload the garage. The boat is now out of the sun, tongue locked, and behind locked garage door, which definitely makes me feel a whole lot better.

The bronco was put on its side off roading and then because of terrible location of the accident it had to be dragged on its side. Plans for that is the doors and roof come off, broken suspension fixed, mirrors put on, re registered and i have my tow/toy rig back.

Anyways back to the boat, the wash last night with Dawn dish soap followed by BioKleen fiberglass cleaner seems to have taken all chalk off the hull. Now its ready for buffing and waxing. That's a project for a day later this week. Tomorrow is going to be getting the foot throttle, other guy I was going to get one from is busy till late this weekend and I want to go out. Also tomorrow I am putting that in along with a new cable I got from work. The fuel/water separating filter is going to be changed tomorrow, keep forgetting to do it even though it's in front of my face every time I look at the boat. My buddy has fiberglass seat shells that are going to be a quick solution to be able to use this weekend. And if I can talk my girlfriend into going to Kingman it will be registered tomorrow.

Thanks again everyone, come check it out on Sunday when I am on the water. I don't know where I will be but updates will be given. Along with more pictures.

Ok here is the list of goodies I have gotten or have for this so far:

x2 fire extinguishers
x4 life vests
x2 throw life preservers (came with boat)
x1 dog life vest (just for underway in case the dog bounces out, she swims great,  just better safe then sorry)
x2 2x6 for the missing bunks (two missing)
carpet for bunks
new trailer safety cable
new d-links for safety cable
first aid kit
bactine
key floaty
air horn
rape whistle (signaling whistle)
4 pack hand held flares (day/night)
new drain plug (makes 3 for 1 hole lol, better safe and prepared then sorry)
super glue (stupid fixes or worst case, wound seal)
12v marine power plug
x4 dock line
x4 fenders
tie downs (trailering)
sand spike
suction cup bow and stern lights (I don't want to cut holes in the hull)
spare oil
already have a Streamlight flashlight (the best and brightest I have ever used with a charger and spare battery.)
Matco tools Power Pro portable jump starter (this will start practically anything with a dead battery, plus it has a built in flashlight with S.O.S. and the ability to charge devices)
box anchor
anchor rope
ski vests (1 for me, 1 for the girlfriend)
battery switch (on-off)
Startron fuel treatment
Spare fuel/water sep. filter (gas docks are known for watery gas.)
Magic siphon hose (in case I run out of gas and someone is willing to let me use their gas)
EZ up

Still needed:
flare gun with flares
UHF radio (SEA TOW COME HELP ME lol)(I hope i never need Sea Tow but that is why they are there)
a small safe (for valuables if we leave the boat at a dock or at the beach)(will figure out how to hard mount or cable mount)
buoys for anchors (may just use extra fenders that came with boat)
a new battery (blue top optima, probably get this next spring)
tool kit
bee stinger removal kit
benadryl (for sting reaction help)
storage totes for a lot of this stuff
spare batteries for anything that takes them
and if there is room a spare can of gas.

Now you may say; "DAMN! That is a lot of stuff in a small boat, you could do away with some of that." And my response would be "NO WAY!!". It is better to have it and not need it, than to need and not have it. If you think I am forgetting anything let me know.

Both my girlfriend and I believe in being prepared for anything, and knowing her there will be a full trauma kit added to this list too including tourniquet and surgical supplies. Safety on the water comes before fun. I want to go home at the end of the day and I want you too as well. It may be my first boat but not my first use of one.

Thank you again,

Fenders on a low profile boat are about as good as nerf bars on a low rider, headers hit the dock first...
ski jackets for all onboard
throwable pfd
fire extinguisher
whistle
registration

leatherman
cell phone and wallet
skis and ski rope (ski flag, too)
two beach chairs & umbrella
vans
full ice chest (and 'coozies)
full fuel tanks...50 gallons
lunch...optional...there's always Lazy Harry's

Weight directly affects performance, especially on a jet.

Forgot the flag and ice chest lol. Wish I had 50 gallons of gas. Found out it has 20 gals total. Ya fenders are more for floating then docking but being able to have that little bit of piece of mind while the gf holds the boat while I get the truck will be nice. There are no cleats so docking is pointless any way. I have everything in the first part of your list in mine. But thanks for the leatherman idea! Ya I may lose some performance with the weight but if I was worried about it I could stand to lose 60lbs. myself lol. I don't own skis just a knee board.

The 'lil bow rider holds 22 gals (11/side), plum to the top-
Laughlin bridge to Needles bridge- 70 miles round trip, used 14 gallons  about 5 mpg or so...But it's just a small block...
4200-4400 rpm all the way back, chasing daylight...

I hope it will do Havasu to Fort Mojave at least 1 direction without running out. My problem is a size 12 lead foot, a big block, and a 4 barrel carb. Just got the battery switch and ski vest for me in at work today. Going to do more work on it tonight. Will get pics up, with what I did. Girlfriend will be going tomorrow for registration. She was to tired today, she closes at her work. I really really really want to go out!!!

Ford ,.... Chevy it don't matter bud, just have fun with it. I never listen to the ford and Chevy back and forth. A running and floating boat is a good boat.
Nice little squirt, enjoy and happy boating.

Race a Chevy .... Pull it with a Ford hahaha 👍🍺🍺

So, My 460 cu. in. 4 Bbl jet boat gets ~2 mpg, And its 48.5 miles 'tween Thompson Bay and The Avi (The gas dock in Ft. Mohave) Do ya feel lucky? Y'er 8.5 miles/4.25 gallons short. 5 Gallons may not cut it. Gas up at Topock Tina's/Pirates' cove, both ways.

Oh, YMMV

No I don't feel lucky. Definitely will fill up at topock. I think all my luck was used up in getting this and it not having a million things wrong. That I know of any way. Well last night my friend showed up with plywood to put on top of the old sub floor asking with lag bolts. This is a quick fix. When I have my 5 weeks of this winter, the old sub floor is coming out. Also got the bunks carpeted and there was enough carpet to do the sub floor. It isn't pretty but works. O and the foot throttle I got is mounted and working great. Seats are going back in tonight. I had to take apart the fuel filter mounting base and reseal all the fittings. It was leaking gas. Anyways I have to get pics up tonight after I rewash and wax it.

I am game for a Miller regatta! Anybody say SANDBAR! now all I need is a name for the boat
