If you notice the way the water lines on the engine were run in the before photo (not my work) you'll understand the ultimate demise of that engine. Despite being fed very cold water from the Klamath river the engine got hot, very hot! Turns out the the previous owner must have grounded on a sandbar, or beach - the block was completely packed with sand, salty sand. FUBAR, wouldn't even hold freeze plugs the block was garbage.
While I do think the minimalist look they were going for looked cool (or maybe they didn't have enough hose?) water should never go directly from the pump to the block - they used like 9' of hose, I used 35'. The new system has a pressure relief valve, a ball valve, a sea strainer, and a flush hose connection - then it goes to the logs first. Dual temp sensors, a water pressure gauge, and the Hardin thermostat kit.

Reading the above I notice it almost sounds like overkill. Perhaps I should mention that when the  engine bit the bullet I was 33 miles up the Klamath river. After guiding a rudderless boat down a fast flowing river that bends more than a snake with no power - I don't EVER want to do that again. The only way I could control her with my one short paddle was to lay on the for-deck and scull. A long nerve racking, exhausting (and dangerous) trip home.

Cold water comes from the pump, through a ball valve, pressure relief valve then up the line on the port side to the silver "t" on the front of the engine - spits and goes into the front of the exhaust logs. Warmer water exits the rear of the logs (underneath) and goes to the 2 blue "t's." If the thermostat is open water enters the water inlets on the block, circulates up through the heads and exits the lower set of thermostat outlets and out through the collectors and on out of the boat via the exhaust. If the thermostat is closed, water bypasses the block and goes instead to the upper of the thermostat outlets, then out through the lower thermostat outlets, to the collectors and on out of the boat via the exhausts. Simpler than it probably sounds. :-) It's just like the diagram that came with the Hardin thermostat kit.

looks like you have water going into the block and tstat (or out) at the same time.
Are you sure this is correct.

Im not doubting you at all i just wouldnt want you to do any damage and i have never seen this before.

Yes, it's correct - water pressure differential operates a spring loaded bypass valve in the upper thermostat housing.

This is me being a moron.

Why did you not go from the pump to the rear of the manifolds then from the front of the manifolds to the water inlets tees?

This would make the manifolds more uniform temperature wise because the water would be "counter flow" to the exhaust heat.

You would also have used way less hose.

What do you have your relief valve set to and where does that water go?

Not trying to be a douche, just seeing if I can help you prevent a problem. While your system may work fine, I think there is some room for improvement.

Looks killer btw.

Pressure relief is set to 15psi it dumps through a thru-hull fitting. The combined length of pressure relief valve, ball valve, sea strainer, and flush connector puts the water outlet just behind (and beside) the port side engine mount necessitating a big looping u-turn of some sorts to return to the rear of the logs + I believe it will drain better when I open the drain petcocks this way.

Not to mention the killer deal I got on a 50' roll of 5/8" hose on eBay - when you are a disabled/retired researcher who worked at the big search engine that rhymes with Frugal (NDA - they get seriously testy) and the have time to read almost every posting on eBay looking for mis-classified, or otherwise hidden bargains - you'd be surprised what you can come up with. :-) Total expenditure to date (much of which was registration) including the purchase of boat, trailer, then new block to heads engine rebuild, and a rebulid on the JC - under $2300! 

I shudder to think of what I could do if I still had any money! When being poor sucks, you've got to get creative. Dad would be proud :-)

This its just my opinion and you are in no way obligated to listen to me.

I would bump the pressure relief to 20 psi. My reasoning is pretty simple, depending on what size pipe/fittings/hose you have used from the pump, by the time you get through the 10' of hose, the strainer and the tees, your net water pressure would have taken a hit of a few pounds making the block pressure only about 12psi. This is really not quite enough to prevent some stream pockets from forming in the heads causing a potential detonation or flash overheat issue.

There is nothing circulating water in the block when the stat is not calling for cooling...

Also, I recommend feeding the rear of the manifold first. Explanation is simple, coldest water to warmest exhaust, again, counter flow.

Another recommendation I will make is to run the hoses from underneath the motor. Explanation again is what you have already experienced, you have made a perfect inverted trap so that every time you shut the motor off, the sediment will run down into the engine where out can get trapped in the block.

If the hoses are the low spot, the crap settles in the hose where the velocity of the water is much greater than it its in the block. Reduces trapped silt ten fold.

Again, just trying to get you pointed in the right direction.

Two small holes in the thermostat allow for modest flow with it closed.

Don't know what pressure the relief thinks it is set at, I measured the pressure I adjusted it at from the intake manifold.

Agree in principal, just not in this particular application - ran into several unsolvable (for free) dilemmas when I ran it backwards.

The two small holes allow air to escape and a small amount of water so it gets a good sample of the temperature, there is still no actual "flow".

I think what you have will work great,I was just trying to see if it could work "better"...

Follow-up: Well the Hardin thermostat didn't work (as has been pointed out by others) and almost toasted my engine - I got lucky. Pulled the guts out and bypassed the bypass - would rather run cold than as hot as I got! I can see how they could make it work, and make it work reliably. But I'd need a really good parts reference, or a machine shop.

Come on Hardin (CP or whomever you are), a plastic doohickey and a mickey mouse spring - really? :banghead:
