Your Opinion?
« on: June 23, 2010, 10:33:14 PM »
I am interested in this boat.
http://stockton.craigslist.org/boa/1798490743.html

Talked to the dude tonight. These are the details:
19 footer.  460 Ford, relatively stock with a decent cam. Something between 400-450hp.........seems reasonable.  Says it runs 65-70mph..........once again seems reasonable.  Granted I would like to go a little faster, but still, not completely complaining.  Not a full stringer hull.
He says it doesn't porpoise like some of the super jets that I have been reading about.
The one part that threw me off was the nose of the boat is closed off and full of foam.  Is this normal? Are the Super Jets like that? Not to sound too stupid, what is the purpose of the foam?  I owned a 72 Sanger V-drive and it just had a hole where I could throw things in the front.

Anyway, would like to hear what you guys think about this boat, price and what not before I get real serious.

I don't know if it is just the quality of the pictures or what, but it looks rough to me....

Go look, touch, feel and smell...Let us know. ;)

Seems like a fair deal to me, but you wont be stealing it unless it is tons nicer than the pics dictate. (it would have to be near flawless to be worth 5,500 frogs to me)...

Foam is typically there just for flotation in case stuff happen, most folks tear it out. I think Sanger was somewhat hit and miss as far as it's use.

So I accidentally ran into this boat again on Craigslist.  Look at the price drop!
Talked to the guy last night and it is available.  Apparently a guy came yesterday and semi low balled him.  He is contemplating it.
I would still need to see it, touch it and run her.
He sent me 10 pictures last night.  Paint and engine look good.  Pump looks pretty good.  The only hiccup is the interior.  Would need to be replaced in the off season.
Now I am starting to think it might be too cheap to pass up.  Whatcha think?

What'd the guy lowball him at?  $4200 still seems a bit high to me for whats out there, but if you like the float, go for it! I'd demand a water test drive for that price though. But I'm like Glenn, I'm a cheap bastard! Only two turnkey boats I ever bought were my Pickle (Stole that one, really), and my ( RIP ) Biesemeyer, and I paid far less than that for each of them.

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/boa/1863201199.html

Not a 460, but just an indication.

As far as the porpoising issues, I only know of two Sangers that had the issue. It's been an issue on MANY more, but various brands. These boats are old, spend most of their life on a trailer either outside or in a garage that is not climate controlled. Things settle in, and to be honest with you, I don't think any of the companies envisioned them still being used 40 years later. These are issues that CAN be dealt with through trim tabs, ride plates, wedges, etc, etc without flipping the boat and a total blueprint of the hull.

How many 70's and 80's cars are atill around, in the condition and every weekend use most of our boats are? Think about how many cars were made then compared to the number of jet boats, and it's kindof alarming!

Go look at it, do as Nordie says, jump up and down and see if you can break the floor. If it passes that, look at it under fluorescent lighting, if possible, to see if any repairs, bondo, etc exist under the paint. Then wet test it, buy it, and have a good time!

Thanks for the info Ray.  Been so long since I bought a boat and with this market it is nice to hear from different points of view.  I am going to call him, just not sure of what tact I will use for the pricing.

Just talked with him, found out some good info. Very cool, straight forward guy.
He would like to get 3800.
The guy on Monday offered him 3k, but he wont go that low.

Said a test drive is no problem and that I would be "impressed".
Said the hull/floor is strong.  Only thing it needs is interior in the future.
Told him I would call him Friday to set up a test run(still some small details I need to workout). Thinking of offering 3,5k.

By the looks of the pics and everything that you have said, I believe if you waived 3,500 in his face... He would take it.  I don't know much about boats to be a judge of what it is worth but I would check to see if he is lien selling it.   The fact that he dropped the price that much and is willing to take 2grand less than what he asked for orginally just means that he is someone who is happy to get money for it.  Also, all the picutres look like its at some sort of shop, that is what makes me think about the lien sale.  Just my .02

Food for thought I paid 2k for my boat, it neads love but it ran and i bought it from the original owner. so if you think you can nab it for 35 then give it a shot . the worst the guy can say is no.

Mine was stiff when working it back and forth on the trailer.
Once I got it on the water and under power, it was amazing!

I paid 3500 for mine needing paint and interior but the boat itself was in awesome condition not even a nick or stress crack in the  fiberglass. But boat stands for bust out another thousand for a reason. My repaint and new interior ended up being a redo of the whole boat, motor and trailer cost me another 12000. but at least I know what I have now. the main thing is to make sure its a good platform to build on no point in putting money into something thats crap to start with.

Speaking of which, thanks Bruce,  Been eyeballing this one for the last few days. Went and saw it Saturday. Moo's twin sister with a BBC, but a little newer and completely original! Moo's original paint scheme was VERY similar. A good solid boat, smokin price, just dunno WTF I would do with it?  :screwy:  Beleive me, been HARD to convince myself I don't need this focking thing!  But it IS nice!

If I was Mouzer, I'd buy it and try and peddle it to my friends for a 50% or so profit........But I ain't that guy.......

Hey Ray-
I find myself perusing CL ferquently "just to see" whats out there and there are ALOT of nice looking deals out there for sure.
Since I have so little time anymore I keep my eye on making what I have work rather than switching horses at this point. We had a great time at Bartlett with the Tahiti.  Saw a really nice eliminator.

But, I saw a really sweet looking pickle boat w BBC on CL recently that sur emade me think twice.
But based on my history showing up at home with new (old) vintage race bikes in tow, I think my wife can count how many boats I have much easier than how many bikes. That spells trouble :-)
