454 issue
« on: May 11, 2015, 10:00:47 AM »
was cruising up the river to the avi on Saturday  when my motor shut off. right before it  shut off my temp and oil pressure were perfect. it just shut off. no knock or pop. thought I ran out of fuel. popped the hatch to find steam coming from breathers and carb. pulled dipstick and my oil level was good, and started to steam out the stick hole. tried to start it to get to a beach but she would not turn over. where should I start? motor was rebuilt a year ago and  has 22 hours on it.

Ouch! Could vapor lock be a possibility?

What were the volts reading before shut off? Did it crank at all when you tried again?

That happened on my uncle's boat. The jet seized. He was sure he lost his motor when it happened. See if you can disconnect the driveline, remove the plugs, and carefully spin the motor over with hand tools. Or at least look at your impeller through the intake and see if your impeller looks normal. That's where I would start. Best of luck to you!

Yup sounds a lot like a pump failure.

Even though the temp gauge indicated normal temperature, did the engine feel excessively hot when you opened the hatch?

You didn't mention any milkshaked oil when you pulled the dipstick, so far, so good.

Start with the basics, verify that you have fuel, spark, and compression.

I would also check for flow obstructions inside the engine.  Back flushing might dislodge debris.

Good luck,

Joe

so I found part of my problem. all my other plugs look good except for this one. I will pull the valve cover off later today and see what happened.

Going to need to pull a bit more than a valve cover.

I'm thinking head.

Wallet got too thick. The cash sensor is overly sensitive.  Lol

Either a dropped valve caused by a retainer failure,  a seized stem/guide, a rod bearing failure, valve train geometry issue, cold water (reversion).

The list is both long and distinguished.
