454 Popping at idle- WITH VIDEO
« on: July 19, 2013, 09:49:22 PM »
Hey guys,

I posted earlier about my engine cutting out at anything above 4,000 rpm. It also make a popping noise at idle, it seems to go away once im off idle though. Ive made the mixture super rich and it still does it, in the video i advance the timing like crazy and it seems to make it a little better but I cant tell it if the increased rpms that are masking it or not. Any advice on what this might be will really help me out. Ive already gone through and checked to see if any of the rockers where loose in case there is a flat lobe and there isnt any. Any ideas on what might be causing this? The dizzy is an msd street fire and it fairly new. All plugs and wires new as well. Here is the link

I know it sounds dumb but are all your plug wires on good we were at the river for the 4th and my friend bob had put new plugs wires cap rotor on and it was popping at idle and would not turn any Rpms  he could turn the dizzy back and forth about 90* and it did nothing it turned out that when he crimped his plug wires he did not crimp two of them right and was only running on six cylinders a trip to Blythe car quest and 19 bucks later for some cheap chevy plug wires and some timing and ran like a champ

two things come to mind when i watched your video, check your plugs for a crack in the ceramic . next look at your cab, make sure there is not a crack in it or or the rotor.

Ive checked the cap, rotor and plugs and there all in good condition. Im taking it out for a test run right now to see if Ive fixed it breaking up at 4,000 rpm. As for the popping im going to put a different distributor on it this afternoon and see if that fixes it.

First due a compression test on all cylinders just to make sure engine is mechanicly sound. that will tell you if the valves and rings are in good shape. sounds like ignition problems, have fun.........

Reason I asked about the MSD....they have a tendency to switch the purple and green wires that connect the box to the distributor....and it'll act just like yours is.  I just cut the old connectors off and put spade terminals so I can try both ways.  All but one MSD distributor that I've used had this problem

Popping at speed would automatically make me think extreme lean condition. Fatten the jets up a LOT and see what happens.

Just my .02

I have fattened up the jets, went from 74s to 80s, made no difference. Also I do not have an msd box. I did a comp test, All cylinders were between 150-130 and one was at 118. Didnt see any valve springs that were broken and all rockers seemed to be moving the same.

Make sure your coils getting enough volts my ford would not rev over 3800 and I fattened the jets no Change changed the dizzy no change took to a friend he was testing things with his test light and then he said let's just try this and he put the test light on the hot side of the battery and then to the hot side of coil sucker revved up like a kx 250 hit 5500 like nothing turned out there was only like a 16 gauge wire to the coil with bad crimps and it was not getting any volts so we rewired it with a 12 gauge wire I think and been good since

That is next on my list as well. The battery side of the hei cap has a small wire coming off of it that is connected to this little box lookin thing that had 2 other wires coming off for the battery and starter. I'm going to hook up a fat wire straight from the battery to the coil.

Apparently it is a relay selanoid. And it doesnt look like it is grounded to the head very well. It id only held on by one bolt on the side of the head. The seloniod has the battery, starter, ignition and a wire that goes to the positive on my coil. Wonder if this could be the culprit...

I had a 1973 18 foot kona and I mounted the fuel pump on the bulkhead and my foot would tug on the hot wire to it and it had the little push on elbow fitting and it would pull on it just enough to lose power all ways at wot then when foot was out it would rest back enough make contact and work again two carbs two dizzys wires coils later found out it was the wire ran good two more trips and blew the head gasket dam 455
