I wasn't going to post about my rebuild, but the thread this morning about the site being slow because of FB and not a lot going on changed my mind about it. So here it goes. I'll bring you all up to date and then post when things happen or when I can. By the way, I'm no where close to an expert on motors or rebuilds.

I started this project in Dec of 2016 thinking I’d have it ready for Summer of 2017. Well, that just didn’t happen. I guess most projects turn out that way. I pulled the motor because I had a lot of oil blowing out of the breathers. I tried 4 different set ups to alleviate the problem, but nothing worked so I figured it was a good time to freshen up the motor. I wasn’t going to do much other then just freshen up and rebuild. Well, that changed quickly. Here's a picture before I pulled the motor.



My boy, who is 4 years old, and I pulled the motor and began tear down.  Upon inspection we found some pretty bad wear in some of the crankshaft main bearings and a hydraulic lifter that had a missing lifter cup retainer. Other than that, things looked pretty good.





My neighbor Rick, who is an Automotive Professor for our local college, has been helping me with the motor rebuild. We got the block over to his shop and got all the machine work completed. Upon inspection we found that the cylinders had already been bored .060 over. So, we honed them and got them to a finishing number of .061 over. Unbeknownst to me I had/have a 468.





It’s at this point that things began to change Rebuild wise. A friend of mine, who had rebuilt his motor the year before, had a set of Merlin heads sitting on the shelf. He told me that I could have them, free, for my build. I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity for some more bolt on HP. I picked up the heads and brought them over to the shop to begin work on them. We tore them down, cleaned them up and decided it would be good idea to have them sent out to be rebuilt by L&R Engines in Santa Fe Springs.

As far as the carburetors goes. I pulled the duel Holley 650's and brought them over to C&J Engineering in Santa Fe Springs. I gave them all the info for the motor and had them completely rebuilt. They are looking bitchen now!! 




 
The last couple months we haven't been able to do much on the motor. So, I've been cleaning up wiring and other stuff on the boat. I decided to add a droop and place diverter to the berkeley pump. My plan is to have the motor dyno tested and then have the pump gone through and matched to the motor. Of course that's more $$$ but, I know it's as important as the motor. Maybe more?





So this is basically where I'm at with the rebuild. We'll be getting back after it this week. I'll keep up posting as well as I can from here on out. Thanks for tagging along and I hope you enjoy.

Dang! Lots of good info there! Love the look of the pump. Super sexy. How much did the crab rebuilds set you back?  Did I miss an actual picture of the whole boat? Would like to see that. Hoping to be done by spring 2018?

Carb rebuild was $525. I'm hoping to be done by spring for sure. This has taken way longer then I wanted already and I don't want to miss another summer. Here is a pic of the boat the last time it was in the water. It's an 81 Bahner.

So I  had the same  setup  as you have on your pump earlier this year and it rode really wet.
Wedges didn't help!

Doble drilled the bowl
Switch to a place.droop with bolt on ride plate.
Made the boat real loose in the ass

Congrats on the solid numbers on the dyno. 

Where do you plan on going for the first trip back out?

Either Elsinore or Silverwood for a shake down. Then hopefully Parker for a weekend trip.
