455 carb?

so I did read a post on here from some other members and just wanted to see if everyone agrees. I have an avenger with a
455 olds - Berkeley jet. bought in bad shape with a blown motor. just rebuilt the motor and haven't been able to make it happy with fuel. ive had several issues fixed and working on the last few, for now lol. engine -block 30 over, lunati cam, edelbrock torker intake, Hardin marine logs. fuel, it has a Holley 850 DP and a mechanical fuel pump. I think the 850 way to much but thats what was on it when I bought it. for the new carb I was thinking edelbrock 750? thats what a few others said worked well for them in previous posts. also, has anyone with a similar set up went to an electric fuel pump?

Most guys on here will tell you to keep the 850. I’ve never had an olds so can’t really say much. Any pictures of your Avenger?

No help on the 455 other than removing them.
I run a 750 Holley VS on my 454, about 500 hp. I tried an edelbrock 750 and didn't have the performance or fuel economy of the Holley. Both were fed by a Carter electric fuel pump, Gen V block, so no mechanical fuel pump boss.

I'd say stick with the Holley, and throw a renew kit in it. Jet it accordingly.
Run the biggest flame arrestor you can. Monitor fuel pressure.

Best setup I had on mine was a dual plane intake. 1” spacer. Holley 750 DP with high flow needle and seat with some fat jetting. All fed by a Holley red electric wired with a relay to an oil pressure switch. I personally do not like the Edelbrock square flange aluminum carbs. They just don’t deliver like a Holley does. Good afternoon...i have a 455 olds bored 40 over and stroked with c heads run a edelbrock air gap intake and a 800 edelbrock avs 2 carb with a mechanical fuel pump...runs great and very reliable fires up right away everytime

I’ve always had good luck with the Holley 750 vacuum secondary carbs. If there is nothing wrong with the 850 I would run it.

Those Avengers have a cult following here in NW Oregon. One big issue they all run into into when running hard or pulling skiers is the flame arestor are too small. Looking at yours, it is the same size as all the ones I see, and they remove them during hard runs, or pulling skiers. Mine has had the hatch modified (taller) to be able to run a taller manifold and arestor.

A stock ford 460 on the dyno, the flame arrestor off was good for 30+ hp. Same flame arrestor you have.
Keep that in mind.

What kind of heads do you have??? I was trying to see in the picture but couldnt see the letter on there where its supposed to be...did you change the heads or could it be that you have small block olds heads on it?

Awesome to see another 185 Avenger on here! Mine is a 1979 460 Ford W/ JG pump. It’s always been an Oregon boat, definitely popular and sought after model around here.

personal opinion is since you have the holley, NO WAY would i spend and money buying a Edelbrock for it. I would focus on making the holley work. I have had both a 1000 cfm hp holley and a modified 750 DP holley on our olds and both pulled 5100 rpm so....

Holley dp's changed my life lol
I run a tweaked out 750dp on my built bbf
Best thing i ever did to the whole boat was throw out the edelbrock 850 that was on it.
