455 OLDS tuneup?
« on: April 22, 2009, 09:45:51 PM »
I've got an '82 Nordic with a 455 OLDS and I need to get ready for summer. I need to do an oil change, new sparkplugs, wires. What is the best oil to use? Sparkplugs (including gap)? How would I match up a set of wires and what would be the best? I bought the boat last year in Tuscon, AZ. and only ran once at Silverwood before taking home to Missouri. I noticed that a few of the wire boots melted. Any help?

First off, welcome to SOCAL!

On the oil  question...sort of left it open ended, what temp does the motor run (does it have a stat?)

If it runs nice and chilly I would stay with say a 40 wt racing oil (for the added zinc content).

As far as wires, depends on your budget, seriously, if you want a set of wires that will be the envy of everyone around, buy some Jacobs ceramic boot 8MM wires, they will last virtually forever, but plan on using a nut to purchase.

As far as bang for the buck, pick up a set of Taylors, they come in a bunch of colors and can be custom cut to length, I use both Jacobs and the Taylors, both very nice wires...Stay away from the parts house brand wires though...use;Belden, Taylor, MSD, Jacobs, Accel, Mallory and so on, it's what they do.

Spark plugs, ACDelco, Nippon Denso and NGK are all I have used, all are great, if you use ACDelco, use the marine version (they are plated and don't rust as easily)..

If an electronic ignition .040-.045" (must all be the same) if a point deal .035"

The heat range would depend on the type of ignition system...not to mention head type.
