460 leak
« on: August 06, 2015, 04:28:53 PM »
Ok need the Ford guys input.  Gotta chance to by a boat for a pretty good deal.  Guy says the motor is a fresh built kick ass 460 BUT....  He says there's a water leak and thinks its on the front cover and leaking into the block.  He's already cleaned out the block and changed the oil.  My question is how hard is the fix gonna be.  I've always worked on Chevy's so not much knowledge on Fords...

That's so rough because it could be a number of things it could be a head gasket it could be the gasket on the water block off plate if it's a head gasket it's fixable you just pull ahead change the gasket put it back on the front plate that's easy to take it off new gasket and the silicone and you're back in business there if the block is cracked and leaking into itself then your in trouble then it's taking everything all apart to find out so your question is superhard to answer

Just my two cents he would not have needed to change the oil unless he was getting water into there so it's either a head gasket or the crack black that's so hard to say

^^^^ I'm with the squirrel! He is hiding something. You can get a new long block for about $1000 with a 90 day warranty so worst comes worst your out $1000 and some time.

A timing gasket set is not a major drama.  They are not too different, just don't forget the front two oil pan bolts go into the timing cover.

The main thing is that the water passes through the cover on the Ford.  With that being said, there are groves around the water passages that, in the event of a gasket failure, prevent water from entering the crank case.  It is possible that the gasket simply failed and water got in the oil, but more likely, it is that the cover is either corroded or cracked.  If it is just the timing gasket, you are really not looking at a lot of time or money to replace it.

As Squirrel pointed out, it could very well be a head gasket or worse.  Just be prepared for the worst.  Start with a pressure test of the cooling system to see where it is actually leaking from.  Then I would do a compression test to see the real condition of the engine.  Both, you can do without pulling the engine apart.

Post up what you find and there is always help here on where to go next.

Cheers,

Joe
