Today we tried out Armondo's pan, full load 10 quarts of oil. The engine ran 5200 RPM's with NO OIL PRESSURE LOSS what so ever.
I hammered it out of the hole and the oil pressure gauge stayed right on 75 LBS. There is absolutely
no doubt the Milodon pan was the issue.
Glad to hear it all worked out; now you can have a great summer in your boat!
I called Milodon back and talked to Tom this time. He told me they HAVE had issues with this pan and can't figure out why.
They must have an issue with the baffles - somehow the pickup area is not getting refilled ( the pickup gets uncovered ) or the pan is too close to the pickup causing a restriction.
I was thinking sticky baffles, or the pan may become magnetized causing the gates to stick closed, the only time I have heard of the magnitizing thing was in an aluminum Rock dodger, turned out to be a bad ground from the motor to the hull running an insane 130 amp alternator that would create this field that would magnetize the block.
I don't think there is an explanation as to why it happens, I know from talking with Paul Kane that he's had trouble with 90% of the Milodon pans he's installed, remove the pan and the problem goes away.
I don't believe that any of the speculation above, in regards to the oil pressure symptoms, is the cause of the problem (it's not sticky baffles or trap doors, not a pickup problem per-se, etc). I'm surpised to read here that Milodon is uncertain as to why this particular 460 pan may sometimes create these symptoms...maybe I should give them a call or better yet arrange to visit them next time I'm in SoCal. I think I understand what is causing these symptoms and know how to alleviate (if not downright eliminate) the problem. I don't have these syptoms with my Milodon pan. It's a good pan design in theory, and it does work in most 460 engines....but I suspect that some of the pan's design that was suppooed to reduce windage actually
enhances some of the unwanted windage characteristics by virtue of its desgn, in some cases.
Milodon is a great company and they have been very good to me over the years. They have even stood behind their product long after (and I mean YEARS after) they should have felt any responsibility (they were not responsible)....and I'm talking about trivial expected results of high performance engine usage and wear & tear that comes with such engines. Just about every product they make or offer is a good one; every manufacturer has something in their line-up that may not work perfectly in every application, this is part of the nature of custom engine building.
