460 running on the hose

I have received both sides yes and no to this. So I need a real correct answer. When I run my 460 in the driveway, will it be a problem to turn on the water before I turn on the engine. I have logs and snails. I did this once on a newly rebuilt engine and got water in my oil. Was figuring it was because I started the water first. Any help would be appreciated. I know I'll get the right help here.

Here's a common sense question.

Why does the water need to be running before the engine? Why does the water need to be on after it's off?

Answer, it doesn't.

Start the engine, crack the water, shut the water off before the engine.

There is no water pump to keep lubricated. This isn't grandpa's 50hp outboard were talking about here.

It can depending on how well the exhaust pipes drain.

Technically speaking, with logs, it shouldn't cause an issue, the problem is if it coughs or farts while starting or could ingest some water.

You can run the engine dry for 30 seconds or so before it causes any issues.

Another thing to remember is that household water pressure is in the 60psi range, NO engines cooling system seals at that. Automotive engines run at 15 to 18 psi range, higher and you could possibly risk water where you don't want it.

I lived in an old ranch house for a while and the water came from a huge irrigation well, they had the regulators set for 100 pounds. When you took a shower, you had to be careful, it could knock you through the damn wall. Lol

Sure could wash mud off the 4x4 though.

I have a new house and they restrict the crap out of the pressure to conserve. I had to work really to get the water through my engine.

Im about to make my boat into a planter. Got the motor back in, fired it up, was about to go turn on the water, but after about 10 seconds of running, no oil pressure. Just put in new oil pump, and tested it with a drill to see if oil was good. It tested fine. Honestly I think I'll just cover her up and figure it out in a few months.

Why was the pump replaced?

Is there any chance at all you could have had a little piece of debris in the pan?

Did your oil pump drive rod have the retaining clip on it? Iv seen this several times that clip is not on the drive rod and it falls out into the pan while stabbing the distributor, then no oil pressure, kooky furd thing you may wanna check out...

Gt, the guy helping me noticed that even though the engine was newly rebuilt, the oil pump was very old. So we figured since we had it out to change it.
Aquaholic, I will check into that before I plant the flowers in the hull.

Well, I have not bought the planting soil YET, BUT have not figured it out. On the drill, immediate oil pressure, on the distributor, zero. Going to take it to a shop and drop it off. One guy thinks maybe it spun a bearing, I know distributor is good, it was working on the first start up. I'll keep you all posted, thanks for asking. Looking forward to boating with you guys.

Did you set the distributor gear depth? Is the hex rounded out?

If your looking at an old electric oil pressure gauge in the dash, pick up a cheap mechanical gauge and just stick it on the engine. You might just have a bad gauge, wire, or sender acting up from vibration when the engine is running. I keep a mechanical gauge in my tool box I use for first start situations. Seen to many wonky electrical gauges to trust one on a fresh engine unless I know 100% the gauge/wiring/senders are good.
