460 shuts off

Hey what’s up everyone, I’ve been hangin around website for a couple months finally joined today. I am pretty new to boating, bought my first boat last year for $1500.00. It’s a 21 ft Omega open bow with Jacuzzi pump and a ford 460. I had to redo the sub flooring, bought a new jet for it and had the carb rebuilt. I was reading some of the forums, and hope to learn a lot form this site.
I ran into a problem I took the boat out on the water it runs fine for about 15 minutes then it abruptly shuts off. I am not really mechanically inclined but I don’t mind get my hands dirty. It’s done this twice once at speed and once while idling, after it shuts off it won’t start back up for about 30 minutes. I am rewiring the gauges this week. Does anyone knows where I should start?

Welcome to SCJB

GT is correct about the addiction, once you get involved you can't stop.

The next time it does it, open the fuel cap and try starting it again. It might not be venting properly.

Keep us posted as to what you try/find.

WHY do you have a ballast bar on a FORD they don't use one they have restore wire my 02 through ballast in the river and wire it like a Ford not a half bread Ford used a restore wire not ballast bare
must of been a Chevy guy wired it check with jumper wire, if it is Chevy tufluck...

Yeah got me too Glen,

But Honestly, didn't I just go through this very same thing in the other thread, and though "Unlikely" from some, was a problem with the Ballast and/or Coil.

Could be a fuel filter or other, but then it would sputter to a stop. If it just dies, it's electrical. Make sure your ignition switch is in good shape, but again, change out the ballast and coil. I know many do not beleive me, but I've seen those things (ballasts) cause some really weird chit, especially around water or moisture of any kind.

Change them. $15 fix. Have a nice day,

Chevy used resistor wire too, but this is a boat so who knows. I went out on a boat, "everybody look at me" yesterday and it was a chevy, murcruiser, had a resistor. But anyway, it would run for a while and stop. New fuel pump and inline filter. It had a QJ, quadrajet carb, which had a filter in it. Couldnt get the hardline loose so I unbolted the carb and bent it up and unscrewed the carb off it. Pulled the filter out and away we went!

You guy are awesome!!!! After I got home from a long trip to Yuma AZ (to register boat), I went to the auto parts store and bought a replacement ballast resistor. I swapped it out and after a couple tries and a shot of starting fluid it started up. The amazing part was that it didn’t shut off after fifteen or twenty minutes. I let it run (idle only) for just about an hour then turned it off and it started right up again. Hopefully tomorrow I can take it out and see what it does away from the trailer. Thanks guys really appreciate the help.

yeah i didnt quite underastand where they were coming from on you dont need a ballast resistor...i was under the impression all points ignitions need a ballast resistor! hope it all works out!

Where that come from was in an automotive application, Ford had used a resistive wrie for their points setups, GM and MOPAR used the ceramic POS we have learned to love...The wire has a resistance per foot and feels and looks a lot like a fusible link wire.

Sooo, now you know.

Most boats use the ceramic POS
