460 stroker for a winter project.
« on: January 01, 2011, 09:13:50 AM »
We are going to try our hand at a stroker build this winter.   This question is pointed
at the guys that have experiance in that department.
I'm after about 600 HP by 5500 RPM's

I have edelbrock 95 cc heads and would like to stay at 10:1 compression.

1.  What brand kits do you recommend or should it be alacart?
I want to stay with forged pistons and H beam rods.  What do you think about a cast
versus forged crank staying in the 5500 rpm zone?

2. What cam to use with the set up?

3. What stroke does a jet boat like?   What CID?

I posted this on the 460 forum too.   We are ready to have the block machine work done now but are waiting for all the right info.   What bore etc.

Any help you experianced guys can throw my way will be greatly appreciated.

heres my take on this, find some body you trust that knows all the in's & out's of the bbf and discuss this with them. Then make up your mind, cause in the end you have to be happy with it not us.

its the internet and if you ask the ??'s enough times eventually you will get the answer you want wheather it is rite or wrong.

well said Ralph. This could go a bunch of different directions. For me, I went to a well known builder who was local and a family friend. He chose the parts based on his professional experience. He has specifically asked me not to post his recipe on the internet, so i'll keep that secret out of respect for him.

I will tell you that we went with a scat forged crank and eagle H beam connecting rods. I spent more than I wanted to on those items but from what I've learned it's a good idea to have strong bottom end parts, that way you can always make changes to the top end that you know the bottom end can handle.

Again, this is just my opinion. My motor is 521" that will spin 5500, HP is unknown as the motor has not seen a dyno.

I hope this helps.

Thank you both and I understand what you're saying.

I need to know what to stay away from and which combination has worked in boats.

The 460 forum has helped out a lot but I still need a bit more.

With the CID question I was after experianced people who may have found "This is to big"
"This is to small"  "But this one was just right".

Maybe that's to much to hope for.

Which brand crank would you guys recommend versus staying away from?  I've heard some brands need machine work nearly as a rule but I don't know which brands they are.   Are the balanced kits worth the money or aren't they balenced well?   This is the kind of info I need.

If you can point me towards what not to use that would be a big help too.

I'm using scat H beam rods and probe pistons with a stock crank now.   I'm not afraid of either the scat or probe.   So if I can nail down the crank and stroke we're on the way.

Thank you again.

Dave, its like this, any kit will need work. i have not seen any ready to run kits. they all need to be checked and fixed accordingly. i would not get a balanced kit. what happens when you need to sand the brand new pistons to get the sharp edges off? you will change the weight, so you will need to rebalance. you may need to turn polish your brand new crank to get it into (YOUR) specs. oh yeah then you may need to heat treat it!!! you are not buying a 3k bryant crank.

one thing i have found out is the more you spend the worse it fits........

my experience is only with scat and it was not an out of the box deal, we had to machine brand new parts.

i hear that the 4.3 crank is a nice combo ( just what i read)

once again find a builder you can trust and follow his lead

X2 on re-balancing everything you buy, we sent everything to the balancer after de-burring and cleaning all the "new" parts up. Nothing goes from the box to the motor, you will regret it if you do.

Lem is working with us on the project now.   The heads are the only question at this point.   We are stuck using the long bolt exhaust logs due to the sun deck.   Will the Trick Flow 290 heads work with these logs is the question.   They have CJ exhaust ports.

The boats are covered up or we'd just do a quick gasket check.   Winter, humbug!
