460 stroker motor build up questions
« on: April 28, 2009, 12:02:37 AM »
well most of you know that i am building a pretty mean ford stroker motor for my hallet. as of right now this is what is being done.
scat steel crank
forged H-beams
Forged dish pistons
.030 over bore

this will make 521 CI with room for a future overhaul

i need some advice for my top end.

i traded my single top tunnel ram for a weind dual top tunnel ram.
i have billet roller rockers.

my heads are the stock iron for now.  i was planning on upgrading to aluminum heads after the summer.  the amount of money that i would put into valves, springs, port and valve seat machining and what i could sell my heads for come pretty close to what i can buy assembled amuminum heads.

as for the carbs i have none as of now.  i was planning of running either 2 holley 600's or 2 edlebrock 600's.  im not sure what is better or if 600 would even be enough.  what are your thoughts on this??  i know that i can re-jet but with aluminum heads in the future, a bigger(possibly roller) cam may be in order.

what i am getting at is with a 521 ci roller motor with aluminum heads will the 600s make it happen or am i leaving power in the fuel tank???

also, with stock heads, with no port work, i am still going to change out the springs.  i want to be able to run high rpms and for the expense of maybe 100 bucks its worth it.  (i can always throw them in my truck down the road when not needed)  with this in mind if i were to need dual 750s could i tune them down so i dont have to buy 600s now and then 750s later?

i know this is allot to chew but i dont want to waste any money.

for this summer i have a guy that will regrind my stock cam to a more agressive profile to get some hp for the summer.

as for my rockers...how much and where can i find the stud girdles? and are they really worth the money?  i have aluminum valve covers but i dont think they are going to clear the girdles.  they are finned micky thompson.

thanks for the help.

I would say stud girdles are worth the money, for higher lift and stronger valve springs  :)

Personally, with a big cubic inch motor, and stocker heads, I would impeller and cam the motor to turn as little RPM as possible. Possibly a AA impeller or bigger IMO. The heads won't really breathe enough for that big of a motor. And I would at least go with the 600 holley's, my BBC with weiand tunnel ram picked up 3mph switching from two 450 dp's to 660 dp's. Maybe even go dual 750's? It's hard to tell until it's running and you can try it. You also don't want to spin a bazillion rpm with the longer stroke

trying to wrap my head around your post :-\

not going to port your heads ??? ok you dont need a girdle at this time unless you are running a roller or solid cam. i would use a victor manifold and a 1050 single dominator

when you get the money purchase  a set of tfs street heads, you wont be disapointed and you manifold will bolt up.  do your pistons have the relief in the stock locations? if they do you are limited to what heads you can use.

I just bulit the same motor myself. It will go on the Dyno next week. I would say the heads would need to be worked over or seems to me that you will not allow the motor to breath well. BBF love lots of fuel and air. I am running two quick flow 750's (flowing 830) they should work perfect for this size motor. if you are going to run 600's IMO would stick with the holleys i have personaly not had good luck with edelbrock's i am sure some people have but i have not my .02 holley is the better choice. I am running a mild hyd roller cam with aluminum heads and a small shoot of nos. I am also running a A impeller with an inducer (thanks to JBP) You are buliding a 500+ Cubic inch motor and you need to be able to feed the beast that it will become. I will post back up next week and let you know the numbers it is able to pull.

My .040 over stock stroke 460 is tunning dual 750's on a Weiand tunnel, and running fine. Cast iron heads (Ported pretty aggressively) and a Comp cams marine solid lifter. Runs out fine, secondaries seem to open just fine by the ass-o-meter, can't get anyone brave enough to stick their face back there at speed.

First off stroker motors are not the greatest for high rpms if thats what you looking for. Great for power tho. I would run at aleast a 350 cc head with that app with a solid roller cam. shaft mount rockers are the way to go. no need for girdles and you can pick up 20 hp over roller rockers..

sturat Whats with the gear drive? I used to have one in my old nova. noisy pete jackson. couldnt hear a dam thing when under the hood lol. My friends could hear me coming a mile away. never seen one in a boat tho.

not sure what relief your referring to.  also...the only reason i wouldnt port them is because im going to upgrade a bunch of stuff including the heads after the summer.  i just want to get the thing i the damn water.

reliefs are the little notches on the face of the piston for valve clearance.

502 turns a impeller 6k

with iron d3 heads 850dp and different cam turned 5500rpm tunnel rams and 2 carbs look coooool but single carb can get the job done for less money and less headache :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

edit, when you put that gear drive in you wont be able to hear what your motor is telling you. just my .02
