Today I decided to pull apart the carb that I had on the boat and rejet it so It could e out back on a smaller motor. When I pulled the bowls off the insides look like they are peeling( blistered and almost like a dried up river bed). My questions are if any o you have seen this before, what would cause this, and finally is it safe to strip all that shit out of there(what I am doing now) clean and run it? It I like slag almost, if you hit it with a screwdriver or tool it will break off.

Time to buy a carburetor bud..

You don't want any of that crap breaking loose and pluggin up a main jet while running it hard, it will lean it out enough to cause some serious engine damage.

Someone at some point before you probably over soaked that carburetor in either caustic cleaner or an acid bath. Those Holleys are anodized and it looks like it was damaged in a cleaning process and delaminating.

Yeah thats what I was thinking too. Only thing is, I tore the carb down last season and it was fine, I never soak the carbs just a quick spray down and dry off with aerosol,  and the carb looked fine at that time.Do you think it could be gas causing this? I know that Ca, is adding ethanol to our gas now and I know that it murfs up fuel systems... Either way I know what I have to do now. Thanks for the help GT

Quick update. I just ran the part number and date code online and found that my carb was one in a bad run of carbs a few years ago. Holley used aluminum from China and it was inferior. It's kind of crazy how bad this problem actually was for Holley, when I was doing some research guys were having problems with their carbs within weeks. Good news is Holley will exchange it for a new one. Bad news, I now have to find my reciept for it,,,, its been a while since I bought the carb and don't remember what I bought it for.

Do you remember where you bought it?

They may have the purchase on file...note; Literally the ONLY good thing that came from computerizing auto parts store....

Yup I think I bought it fom Summit so I have been digging through stacks of files full of receipts and no luck as of yet, if I don't find it,it's no big deal.,

you can log into your account on their site and look at your order history. I've had to do that many times for various things (part number references, time when i bought parts, etc).
