Bassett thru transom headers under cover
« on: June 30, 2009, 09:48:10 AM »
Ok guys, I'm leaving to much on the table with these log manifolds on my 460.  I've been looking for an alternative.   How are you guys making out that use the Bassett Thru Transom Headers  in an enclosed engine compartment?   Will they work with the tall valve covers?

Did you put in additional ventilation as in another blower?  Wrap the pipes with the header wrap?  Put the foil insulation on the inside of the engine compartment near the engine?

I added a picture to give you guys an idea of the engine area.  The other cover sits at the front.  This is an older picture with the real crap manifolds, we do have the long bolts on now.

How are you guys handling the exhaust.  Please don't say take off the ski deck and run over the transom... you'll make the wifes list too!

Tom, do you guys sell this type header?

run water through the headers just like you would do with OT's....of course, they arent going to fit in your engine compartment....youre going to have to reconfig your interior setup anyways.

Get rid of the two rear seats and build it into a sundeck.  With the added performance and a nice place to kick back, you'll be asking yourself why you waited so long to do it.  ;D

Where's the best place to buy a set of these headers?   I could make a winter project
out of it I guess...

I won't take it down over the summer.

Depends if you want them new or used? I belive there's a guy on craigslist in las vegas selling some which is the link below...
http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/boa/1203462670.html

and if you want them brand new you might want to try directly from Bassett in  Anaheim, California
there pretty cool ask for James,Mike or Paul they will answer any question you have, a new set will cost you $1196.25 and thats including tax....I know I just bought some  ;D any way's heres there number
1-800-345-5824

Also keep in mind that if later you find some used ones and they dont have the water lines or tee they will cost you a ridicouls  :banghead: amount of money $196.00 for the water line and $85.00 for a tee from a shop or from Bassett. :screwy:

You don't want those headers under a cover, unless you are looking to start a fire. First off they don't usually have water running thru them at low RPM's and will get very hot, even with water flowing they are not cool to the touch, and the weep holes that let out excess water will fill the area under the hatch with exhaust fumes.   If you want something covered you are going to need water JACKETED headers, I think Lightning Manufacturing makes them.

They aren't cheap, and I think they use a BBC header with an adapter plate.  Doesn't look like you have a lot of room to play with, if you could get the adapters or even have a set made it might open up some other doors, lot's more choices for the Chevy engines, IMCO, GLM, make HP manifold style exhaust for them, and that stuff is much cheaper and probably a bit narrower.  Won't necessarily flow like a tube header, but much better than the log style manifolds.

Rewarder will make you a set to fit, if you send them pictures and measurements they'll make you a set for about $1200 to fit

Or go Old School, order up a "weld it yourself" header kit from summit and start playing  O0

That boat needs a set of water jacketed headers, i.e.  a tube inside a tube.

I know it's a BBF in question, it just might be cheaper to use BBC stuff with some adapter plates.  I think that's how Lightning does it anyway.
