So I want to ditch the logs on my Southwind cruiser but I don't have the big $$$$$ for jacketed headers or the nice manifold type with risers. Can I run Bassett TT headers on a closed motor if the engine hatch is far enough away. The headers would be jet hot coated. Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure that most folks here would say NO.
More importantly, what will the USCG say? Bet that fine is $$$. Of course burning your boat down won't be cheap either. But hey, I've been wrong before.

If youre looking for performance out of those logs, you can cut the exiting tip off. If you notice, they step down from 4" to 3.5" (or something of the sorts close to those measurements). You will need to get bigger tips and exhaust hose, but it will open up the exhaust a bit more.
How is the ol' southwind doing? I was looking at pics of it the other day kicking myself in the ass for selling it.

I kinda figured it wasn't a good idea. Looks like ill be keeping the logs for now. Brad the Southwind has been great. Love the boat and have not hade any issues with it. I am just about take it to a friends for all new wiring, plumbing, steering and the rest of the cables. Ill post some pictures along the way.

I was interested in enclosed engine compartment Thru transom headers as well. I realize that virtually all with knowledge say no but how are the offshore guys able to get away with it.

Those are water jacketed headers. Meaning Theres a pipe within a pipe...the thin space between the two pipes has water flowing between them. Very pricey compared to water injected.

those are jacketed headers. there is an inside pipe that carries the exhaust and the cavity between the 2 pipes is filled with water. they're cool to the touch. those in those pictures are also about $3-4k a set.
single wall through transom headers will burn the shit out of you if you just look at them.
stick with logs, or keep your eyes peeled for a "center rise" exhaust setup like the one in my sig. i found my manifolds for $50 on craigslist and then the risers were like $200. ive seen many others out there for like 300-600 bucks.
