Battery? Starter?
« on: May 09, 2010, 09:43:22 PM »
I have a 1974 Eliminator with a Hardin marine BBC The specs for the motor call it a HM405 they say it has 8.8:1 compression. If she starts first or second try its fine but if it doesnt it burns down the battery QUICK! I put in a new starter and it still does this. Do I need a mini starter or am I looking at problems with a  battery that is too small? If I jump the battery it turns with no issue. How many CCA should My battery be?

is it harder starting after it is warmed up? or just period...couple things i would look into are your battery cables, and all electronics...second thing i would look into is maybe too much initial timing

This could be virtually anything...

Cable size problem, bad ground, bad cell in the battery, tight piston clearances...

First thing you should do is to check the battery voltage with the engine off, should be in excess of 12.5 VDC...

I like mini starters for several reasons, I do not believe at 8.8:1 you need one, but they do work with less battery..

You should have a battery capable of a minimum of 550 CCA... I run a 750 CCA, but have a 10.5:1 CR...

like gt said you need to have minimum of 12.5 volts with engine off. If it acts weird after the boats been running, it could be that ur cables are getting too warm and the resistance in them is climbing or they may be too small diameter. I wouldnt suggest a mini starter for ur application. Im running 10.2 to one compression and to be honest I use a run of the mill autozone starter lol that way if it craps out i can go get a new one, they have been very reliable for me. I would check ur battery, if u can you can take it to autozone and they can do a load test on it because even if the volt meter says you have at least 12.5 voltage that could just be surface charge and when it gets with a load it drops to like 8 or even 6. I run an everstart maxx battery from walmart, lol its the big ass 27 series, and its 3 years old, but hell i cant knock it, i leave it unattended for weeks at a time and it starts right up, it even fired the engine instantly after sitting the entire season in the boat lol.

What is it with you guys and the Deep Cycle batteries?... :screwy:    ;D

With 1150 CCH, one of two things will happen, the boat will start trouble free, or we will be able to see the smoke from space..

It is WAY overkill but I got a smokin deal on it and the other battery I was looking at was an Optima at 200 bucks.

I'd Listen to GT. Put a New Battery in Moo when I put it all back together in Feb, last year, at Big River, June, battery was crap. Pulled one of the batteries out of my F350 (Probably similar to what you bought), Ran and started fine all weekend, but I was nervous about the cables catching fire under hard cranking (Moo isn't the easiest to turn over at 11.5:1). I remember my Dad nearly burning up his Astro Van jump starting it from his dozer battery once.

She got the Optima Bluetop right after that, couldn't be happier so far!

Other side of the same coin, got a Duralast that came with Pickle that has yet to let me down. Put it on the charger before we leave, and it always shows full charge! Damn thing needs a battery tray though......This boat seems to have NOT been designed as a lake boat as more and more of these lil things click together....... :screwy:

Pick up a battery load tester and you'll never wonder about a battery again.  Yours does sound
like a battery giving up.
I got a cheap big ass walmart  battery for mine 3 years ago.  Starts just fine and still reads strong on the tester.

Put a voltmeter on the battery  , turn over engine and check the starter draw, no more than 2 volts. Be sure battery is fully charged, if the draw is excessive the starter is bad or has other issues

New battery in and she cranks with zero hesitation. Obviously was a battery issue. I know a guy at Walmart and some idiot bought a battery that would not fit in his car. Noone knows why he thought he needed a 1150 amp battery but he bought it. They took it back on a trade for a smaller one and sold me that one for 110.00 It is HUGE and HEAVY but My dayscruiser is not a race boat anyway so 30 extra pounds is ok by me.
