BBC cam
« on: March 29, 2011, 10:25:16 PM »
I took the boat out this last weekend to parker for the first run on the new motor. I got this motor from a family friend its a 454 BBC that cam out of a motorhome that had less than 500 miles on it. I think I have a stuck lifter or something is wrong in the valve train, so the motor is coming out this weekend. i thought while I have it out i would change the cam. anyone have any ideas or suggestions on a particular cam to use?

Probably a collapsed lifter, not stuck, maybe even a spit push rod (more common than you think).. ;)

IMHO if you have the resources I would try to go hydraulic roller, if not, I have had pretty good success with the XM Marine cams from Comp, I have a new in the box cam and matched springs and lifters I could sell if interested... :-\

I have this puppy...  http://www.compperformancegroupstores.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CC&Product_Code=11-240-4&Category_Code=MARKIVCAMHFTXM

I bought the whole package a while back and only used the timing set...And yes, I'm F-n retarded... :screwy:

Chevy has, had lifter bore issues, take a small brake hone and clean them up. The lifter needs to be able to rotate, even if you find something else it would be preventive maintance to do so.

What heads? intake? C.R. ratio? Exhaust?

To be honest I have no idea. :o I pick the motor up from a family friend and threw it in the boat and went for it. All i did to it was put new lifters pushrods and gasket kit on this thing. The motor came out of a motorhome. I am assuming the thing is real close to stock minus a cam maybe.

Post up some Casting #'s when you get it. stock heads, springs are limited on lift (.475"?) maybe less?

The biggest problem with stock BBchevys is that the valve guide is tall and won't allow much of an incerase in lift, may be only to .490. You need to check it by having some one measure from the top of the retainer to the head, then while you compress the spring until it hits the top of the guide and remeasure, subtract .060 and thats all of the lift you can have without machining the guides down. Do both the intake and exhaust the amount of clearance will probably be different. Your big problem is the cast hypereuctetic  pistons, even the trucks have them. They will explode at about 400-450 HP, or with ANY detonation. Intake and carb- you can usually get away with, cam usually explodes the Hypereuctetic pistons. Even the stock 330 HP boat motors have the junk pistons too. Also a car or truck ignition curve is way different than a jetboat wants, it not only limits the available horsepower, but kills the fuel mileage too. Good luck.  TIMINATOR

19' Bradhaul (White Trash I), full Mahogany stringered semi light lay up no false floor, no rotten wood, tandem trailer with aluminum diamond plate trim, metallic blue............You would look killer in this boat. ;)

I have two fiberglass buckets, a bench rear seat and enough stuff to get it ready for the water, for the most part.... :sly:

Skinny rubrail, no rail kit, but four point mounts, this boat is a one off type deal...

Your place looks as crowded as mine!

Honestly, though, if you'da backed your truck up a little in this pic, woulda looked like a blast from the past pic of the boat when it was new! What's up with the neighbors? Do they own a vehicle from this century? Havent seen a Citation or Celebrity wagon in many years!  ;)

I also run the Comp Cam marine cam that is set up for a berk.... And it is AWESOME!   Sounds great too at idle.  I manage to idle at about 750 with it and doesn't die.  I switched over to full roller motor when i did a rebuild and it was worth it.
