I have run billet steel, aluminum, flex plates, name it.

Here's my two cents.

Best by far, in my opinion, is aluminum. Not because of "revving quicker" because honestly, that's a bunch of crap. If the pump is loaded properly, that will hold back the revs, not a few extra pounds of a flywheel.

The advantage is ring gear rigidity for better starter drive engagement, a more rigid gyro to better balance the mass and damper the harmonics from the pump and engine.

An iron flywheel is unnecessary weight, but steel had similar advantages of aluminum, just heavier.

Flex plates work, but they need to be quality pieces. The Auto Zone motor home special is inadequate.

The thrust harmonics on a plate are non existent. And why I don't care yo use them.

The race boat had a double ringed aluminum and we ran two starter motors, block and housing mounted. Worked perfect.
