Bbc rear main
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:44:07 PM »
Got the new/used motor in boat. Took the the lake and rear main is dumping oil in the boat. Its a stock 454 out of an 83 truck. Anybody know if this is a one or two piece seal?? Either way im pulling motor back out to do it just wondering how much of a PITA im looking at.

If it is in fact an 83, then it has a 2 piece seal and you'll definitely have to pull the motor to replace it.

I think 85ish is when they went 1 piece. Too bad cause with the 1 piece all youd have to do is pop the flex plate off to change it.

that's funny my buddy owns a place on the salmon river and he tells me that's how the locals tell how far away everything is by how many beers it takes to get there.

Mk 4, to 1990 or so, are 2 pc, Gen V (1991 or so) are a 1 pc.

2 pc. is pretty straight forward, but while your there, use a 1 pc pan gasket:

Voice of experience: Are you sure it's the main seal?  I had a dipstick tube crack on me on an Olds where it enters the block.  Wasn't cracked all the way through, just partially.  Oil didn't spray out or anything, just kinda seeped into the bilge.  Didn't really show up on the side of the pan either.  If you get a little water in the bilge and mix it with the oil, the flywheel/flexplate will sling it around under the rear mount/cover, making it look like a main seal leak.  I pulled the motor to replace a perfectly good main seal.....

Definitely a mark 4 engine, so yes it’s a 2 piece rear oil seal. Try your best to get your hands on an OEM GM seal, or at least FelPro or Victor Reinz, make sure the seal has helical serrations like a factory seal; some of the cheaper seals do not have this feature and will leak. Also offsetting the parting line of the seal from the main cap parting line will also help hold off leaks. I’m still a fan of the original GM style 4 piece pan gasket with the neoprene pan rails, stay away from cork,  when installed properly they will not leak. I have seen some one piece pan gaskets leak. As an engine builder, my best advice for the future when getting your hands on any older/used engine is, at least pull the pan off , spot check a few rod & main bearings and install some new seals at minimum. Also look very closely at the surface on the crank where the seal rides, sometimes due to time there will be a grove or etching and no matter how many seals you throw at it, it will still leak. If this is the case, sometimes a polish will take care of it, or worse case, crankshaft replacement. Me on the other hand I would go through the entire engine and address anything that raises an eyebrow, to prevent any issues in the future, because who wants to do a job twice. Best of luck with your project.

When i got the motor i pulled stock pan off and put my dooley 14qt pan on it. Should have done rear main while i was there. My mistake. Everything inside the motor looked great. Runs awesome just leaks oil. Lol.

The block side of the seal can be slid into place without removing the crankshaft, but you have to be sure to use the little "tab" looking piece that comes with the seal as a guide.  If you just push the seal in it will shave off a little off the back side of the seal that is very important for getting the correct pressure on the sealing surface.

Ok still haven't gotten around to pulling motor. But is there a way to tell if it's oil pan or rear main without pulling motor?

To start you have to get it really clean, then get a liquored up midget to ride back there with a flash light.

Or at least with a lot of duct tape you can get a midget to ride back there...LOL!

Or just do rear main and oil pan gasket too at the same time  Good Luck!
