BBF oil pan question
« on: February 20, 2012, 01:02:07 PM »
I remember way back when there was a discussion about problems with the Milodon pans on the Fords.  I remember lots of people saying they had good luck and no problems, but what was the resolution?  Have they changed the design?  I am going to need a pan and DAMN the Dooley pans with hardware are $700.  OUCH

Anybody have a Dooley or Armando they want to sell?

I got a Dooley, the windage tray and main studs for it. No pickup though, you'd hafta pick that up. But I'm mainly the one that argued never having a problem with the Milodon pan. I think Ralph has, and others have, had success with it as well, but Ralph uses an Armando's now.

I said before, and I repeat, I believe the issues most were reporting with the Milodon pan was due to excessive or too little pickup/pan bottom clearances. Somewhere I have interior pics of both I'll try and find but the biggest differences are that the Milodon uses a Dzud'd in windage tray in the pan where the Dooley's is main stud mounted, and the Milodon uses spring loaded trap doors doors on the internal baffles that the Dooley does not. The anti-slosh baffles look amazingly similar in both, though, as well as the external dimensions, and I will admit, in both cases that I've used the Milodon pan, I disabled the springs by clipping them. I saw, and still see, no sense in them. They would tend to slow the opening, and slow the oil flow to the pickup, and would hasten their closing right when they are needed (Such as an emergency full throttle reverse situation or even a full throttle lift), I would think. I also think the trap door is a great idea, but it just needs to just flop around in there and use gravity, and next time I use one I'd probably go a little further and drill 1/2" holes in the tops of the trap doors.

In a Jet boat, the idea is to get and hold the oil to the back of the pan as much as possible, since that is where the pickup is on these types of pans, and keep it there in all conditions. Harder to do using an HV oil pump than a regular one, mind you. Also understand that full, and in running condition, both hold about 9 quarts of oil.

The Milodon oil pans look to be the same depth front to back but if you look closely they are slightly deeper in the front.
The pickup extends to the back of the pan, unless your engine is mounted at a steaper angle or transversed like in a
drag boat, the oil stays in front due to internal baffles. I put this pan on my 460 and it worked fine up till 2500rpms after that
oil pressure dropped like a rock. Put stock oil pan back on and oil pressure was fine but 2 days latter rods started knocking.
Rebuilt motor and I found a Canton Racing Marine pan that has trap doors to keep oil in middle of pan which is where pickup
is located. It works great with no oil pressure problems, and get this its cheaper then the milodon. Summit Racing has these
pans for $346.00 and pickup for $64.00. Capacity is 8qts with filter and I run a Mellings High Volume pump. Hope this helps.
