Blowing oil (olds455)

I am blowing oil out of the breather at high rpm!WTF dude? its messy it gets my bling dirty!  4800-5200 rpm  yes its a olds, no worries got the mondello pan and roller set up (it sound like its warming up at 4000 rpm?)   
  Note: oil cahnge is ruffy 12 quarts?

Funny you say that, I had the same problem turns out i blew a head gasket filled the pan with water and out it came  thru the dipstick hole/breather it was a funky mess. I also found out i have two cracked heads. I sure hope you have better luck.

 what do you have as a breather on your valve cover, if any. Could be plugged.  If you have a pvc valve it will do it. it builds up pressure and it has to go somewhere.


 When it happened to me. i brought it straight home changed the oil took it back out and tried it again.

 No luck same problem so i took back home changed the oil again and changed the breathers on the valve covers.

Took it back to the lake and it ran like a raped ape ;D

 My next trip was not so good. The motor said uncle :( filled it up with water again. took it home pulled the top end off and two cracked heads. Now im on a mission.

 I also wonder if it was my logs that dumped all that water in my motor? is that possible.

Mine blows oil at High RPM as well and I'm led to believe its just a worn motor which is what mine is . Ring clearances open up a bit and there you go. I put a Pan-e-vac sytstem on it and solved my problem .

As far as breathers go, there should be a baffle in the valve cover and the breather it's self should have some foam in it .

With logs you might consider a pcv valve . You'll know when the oil goes through it and contaminates your intake charge . Not ideal but it will help .

Another thing . Water coming out of the pump should be adjustable , could very well blow a gasket .

On the 455 I had, I plugged one of the breather holes on one side of the engine and on the other side used a PCV vlave. By the time I got off of the lake I had several new oil leaks and oil everywhere. I do not recomend that you only use a PCV valve. Breathers need a baffle on the inside of the valve cover so that the oil does not have a "stright shot" at the breather. Depending on what valve covers you're running would determine the best way to make a baffle. These are car engines and cars don't run at 5200 RPM all day so they don't have that problem even close as bad as boats do.

so i have to weld on some "bungs" to my bassetts ,damn. how far from the tip of the pipes should i go?does it matter?                              I should get better ring seal too huh?

Yep, you need baffles in there. Have a aluminum thin plate tach welded in under there, or sheetmetal with a ? 1 ? inch hole, cut to a rectangle, bend it in a U and hold it in with the grommet and some epoxy - might work...  ???

 Think it would be easier to just buy new ones with the baffles.  I can put my old ones on ebay i just seen them sell a used pair for $100 not to bad. That would help me recoupe some of my $ spent for the new ones,

You are probably FILLING the rockers with oil due to inadequate drain back. Easy test: get the motor and oil hot, shut off the motor for about 2 minutes, that will allow any oil in the rockers to drain into the pan, restart it, blast it wide open throttle. If it spits oil immediatly, either the rockers aren't baffled enough, or there is excessive blowby. If it takes about a minute to spray oil, then its probably inadequate oil drain back. External drainback lines plumbed correctly to the pan, and restricted pushrods will help and maybe cure the problem. Read the Practical Olds article in last years HotBoat magazine.   TIMINATOR
