First off... You don't get to choose what RPM you run it to, the torque and impeller cut will decide that for you.

If you're looking at a new engine, I would recommend spending the money to have it honed to increase the cylinder wall clearances and have a machine shop double check everything anyway.

A stock automotive engine is not intended to run in the 3000-5000 rpm range most of the time like is required from a jet boat engine.

With a low budget project you will always have some trade offs. I ran a peanut 454 in a jet for 4 seasons. Out of the truck and into the boat. In a pinch I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. An application specific build done by a machinist well versed in your type of use is always an advantage. BUT, waiting a season or two to round up the cash..............
I am a big fan of the "just run it" mentality. ;)
I wouldn't run it from Havasu to Laughlin wide open, but I would ski it!

DO IT!

Jetboat engines are 330HP, most truck engines are in the 245HP range, The cam is much smaller, the valves aren't nearly as good quality, the guide and piston/wall clearances, along with every other clearance in the motor is too tight for marine use. BUT, if it has some miles on it, it may last for a while. If you get greedy and change the cam and intake manifold when you discover that an 18 foot boat usually runs about 45-48 MPH with a stock truck motor, you will break it. Pistons, bearings, and valves in that order will fail. The cash saved by buying something wrong for the purpose and being dissatisfied with the performance is usually waaay offset by the credit card costs to do it right the first time. If you are kidding yourself and know that you probably never will have a good motor, go ahead and use the truck motor, keep in mind that when it fails, you're  probably gonna be looking for an undamaged block and at least one head, and usually a crank too. Then again, whats your installation time worth? Oil, filter and other little stuff? Whats the worry about being stranded out in the middle of the lake worth? Make your decision and live with it. I have about a dozen+ engines come in here per year that were just stuck in boats, the cast pistons explode into gravel in the pan, the rod goes through the block, and the head on that side is junk, got one in here right mow. Moral of the story: if you do this, leave the motor completely stock, keep the timing conservative, and keep the full throttle time to a minimum. P.S. look-up the old HOTBOAT article:"A CAR ENGINE IN A BOAT?" Good luck, you'll need it. TIMINATOR

PA? I that a suburb of Santee? Will he deliver it for free to Vegas for the $800? Everybody likes Vegas! I don't think it would fit through the box for carry on. Tell him that I am sorry, but he will have to check it with his normal luggage. I will meet him at the airport. That's just the kind of guy that I am.  O0

I have an engine out of a suburban in my boat right now. I figure if a Burb can do 75 across these wonderful united states in the 3500 to 4500 rpm range only stopping for gas... it will probably be fine in my f-ing jet boat where I run hard for 30 or so seconds and then cruise. Are you planning to race compjet with this engine? Are you looking to add a shot of n02 and drag it? If it pops then pull it out and throw it away. You can build a "purpose built jetboat engine" while you're running this one. My bet is if you treat your boat like it has a junkyard engine in it... it will last as long as you need it to. Just my .02

OMG Brendella >:( can you not read!! If you have a suburban engine in your jetboat and it did not blow up in your driveway, that suburban must have had a boat engine put in it before you got it! It simply cannot be done! Have you gotten this timebomb wet, or is your boat one of those "I have a boat but don't get it wet" boats? I see that you are in Vegas as well. I can give you a number for a good barber if you need it. Just saying.............

P.S. All in good fun.
I believe the 330 horse mercruisers had cast pistons.

I just walked out in the yard and saw the family boat! A 24' arriva bravo1 suburban motor. It has been running 7 years. It only revs 4k @ 55 trimmed out. It has cold water cooling. We take it out about 5 times a year. That reminds me 7 years, it's probably time to change the oil.
If you run a jet behind the truck engine you will probably be limited to 4500 rpm or less.
Again, if you have 6k to throw down for a properly set up short. Do it!
Or if you want to get the boat wet for $800,do it. That same $800 will buy the crank for the new engine.

The decision at hand; skiing for $800 or skiing for $????.

I'm done.
