Broke My Starter Bolt

hey yal i just got into the jet boat scene and i was wondering if i could get some info...i am in the middle of trading my truck and banshee fpr a 79 omega open bow with bbc 454 bored .030 over...the guy told me the lower starter bolt broke off and i was wondering if i could remove the broken piece with out removing the engine and if there was a way or a custom flexplate where i could mount the starter higher up so that i could more easily swap it out? Any help would be greatly appreciated as i am a newbie to this badass sport.

lol there aint nuthin easy about a jet boat, remove exhaust,starter and take it out. ah-hell its a chebby, and i dont know squat about them. dont the starter bolts go up into the block.
ah hell one of the chebby guys will be along shortly to help.

There are jet boat Chevy rear engine mounts out there with starter bosses on them. A custom starter would have to be used with a mount like that. But the three times that I've removed an engine from a jet boat it took me less than 3 hours to remove the engine, same for putting it back it the boat. You can easily have the engine out, fix the problem, and re-install the engine in a day. Chevy starters mount to the engine from the factory and I think it's best to keep it that way to avoid starter/flywheel alignment problems. It is kind of weird that the guy told you the "lower starter bolt broke off" as both starter bolts are at the same level and are the same length. Make sure the bolts you use to put the starter back in are Chevy starter bolts, the bolts will have knurls next to their thread, the knurls align the starter to the flexplate.

the stsrters on the bell housing are also reverse rotation

Remove the exhaust and old starter first and inspect with a mirror before you start to remove the engine. There might be enough of the old bolt remaining that you can get a hold of it with vise grips. If not than remove the engine.

Ifen you decide to replace the starter , I went with a Delco unit from pep boys and got the lifetime warrany one to. It was like $60 and only replaced it once and it was free. The starter that I have in there now has spun the motor a million times , been submerged , sat outside uncovered for 2 years (rain and shine) outlasted two batteries and to this day does not flinch when I push the start button . Maybe thats just me .

The dude might have meant the "shorter bolt" . If there is no tension on the bolt , it is totally retreivable .

There is a bell housing that has a place for a starter up high on the back . It is a reverse rotation starter. and between the bell housing and starter your probably lookin at at least $500 . If your lucky and you might be . Rexmar.com has a great online catalog . You can also call them , very helpfull bunch .

Don't forget to install a front starter strut, they come on all of the older motors, but nobody reinstalls them. You have to over tighten the starter bolts to try and keep it aligned, and then you break the bolt, or use the strut. Thats what it was designed for. TIMINATOR
