Bronze dist gears
« on: April 03, 2015, 01:41:07 AM »
So i know that if u run a roller cam ur supposed to run a bronze distributor gear says everyone. I always have cuz thats what we're supposed to do. But im goin thru my buddies 502 right now cuz it hucked a rod bearing and it has a roller in it with about 8000 miles on the motor. And a regular steel gear on the distributor ... i noticed that pretty quick and started lookin at the cam gear and dist gear and it all looks fine. No harm no foul.. so why exactly is the bronze gear such a big deal for roller application? I just bought a new dist for my boat and the box has abig sticker on it that says for rolller u must use bronze gear.... not sure im really convinced as to why anymore...

If its a GM roller cam, use a melonized iron gear.

from GM:
"Note 2: Distributor P/N 1104067 or melonized distributor gear P/N 10456413 must be used on all crate engines with steel camshafts."

If its a billet roller cam, use the bronze or composite gear.
Some roller cams can be ordered with a cast iron gear, and use a regular dizzy gear for a flat tappet cam (Howards cams can be ordered that way)

I've seen a GM roller and a cast iron gear together, It sharpened the teeth within a few hundred miles.

Find out what / who's cam it is.

Shine a flashlight down the distributor hole. If you see shiny gears, you need a bronze drive gear. If black, steel is ok.

You should be able to use an iron gear.

Check this out.
