Why not go larger displacement?, if there is such as a thing as free power, it comes with engine size. It wouldn't cost you any more to go with a 454 or slighty larger, and sell the 396 to someone that is looking for a period correct block to do a restoration on a Camaro, Chevelle or El Camino, they will pay a good price for those blocks, just my 2 cents worth.

. If horsepower does not mean anything I would not worry about a 396 however if it does I would not even go that route. Go big!!!!!!

Well should have more power than the stock 454 I currently have. I sorta fell into the 396 pretty cheap so it's a go.

Gonna be tuned on a dyno. So I'll know exactly the power numbers then.

I have very basic standard bore 1971. 402 in my flatty. . 9to1 comp xm278 cam. In a very heavy old school flatty itll run 65 @ 5200 all day.. but i do have a prop... im building a 461 but it got put on hold for alil bit. And the 402 is goin back in with a tunnel ram on it.. we'll see how it works out soon... lol.. i love small stroke big bore combo's. Cuz they rpm. Maybe not a jet boat thing tho.. i wanna spin the fu#k outta my prop...>:D

Not true.  The majority of boats we support in NJBA are over the 550ci range and spin just over 7000 RPM.  A few were even turning 9K+ with a gearbox to underdrive the pump, but that class might not make it.

Don't be afraid to let it rev.  A smaller impeller with more RPM might be the ticket with a 396.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out how I could put that engine on my credit card when it went up for sale for $50K.  $1000 for valve springs every pass is just not going to happen in my life.

A healthy 402 small stroke big bore with good parts can run very well.. the good. Most came with steel cranks n forged pistons from the get go.. just sayin. Build it. Its not gonna set the water on fire. But itll run good and be reliable. Budget friendly ish..
