Calling All Engine Experts

So I have a 21 Carrera Eagle Open Bow with a stock Indmar BBC and I want more power. I'm not looking to beat anyone in a drag race just more giddy up with the family aboard. She doesn't do anything over 40mph at less than 4k. And when loaded she struggles.

Can you guys help me understand a Lil more and give some round about estimates on a build or buy. I think she is a good base for a build up but I get lost when I start reading you guys posts on flat tappet and full roller and intake and exhaust valve duration, cams, intake chamber volume, etc. I've looked for complete kits and I've seen Edelweiss Performer top end kits and cam kits but there are a million different options. I need help lol!

Find someone you trust, have look over what you have and give you some options . There are plenty of things you can do to a motor to give it a little more go. I suspect your engine is getting a little tired and could use some freshening up! That would do wonders!!

Lots of questions...

Where are you located?
How may hours on the engine?
Have you tried any tuning on your current set-up?
Are you getting full throttle?
How is it running currently... "Runs good, just runs out of power", "Doesn't run as good as it used to", "runs like crap, just about ready to trade for an oar".

How long has it been since the jet has been gone through?
How much $$$ are you willing to spent for rebuild/improvements?

After checking to see if you're getting full throttle I'd recommend doing a compression test and a leak down test to see what you're working with.

Now lets make a plan of attack!

I have the same boat as yours. Mines an 84. I'm getting to the low 60's with bimini up, full ice chests, full fuel, the wife and kid. I've got a sport loader, inducer, a impeller, droop, ride plate, and place diverter. Pushed with a about 500ish horses.

Ha not ready for the oar just yet.
I bought it earlier this year. I was in Riverside but now in Phoenix. She actually runs very good....nice smooth idle. She does hesitate to start on occasion. Starter is brand new, I bought it. The distributor is new but I suspect it's either not right for the set up or just isn't sufficient. I feel the starting issues when the come up are due to the distributor. It came with the boat.

Just hit 600 hours. I'm sure I'm getting full throttle. Haven't had much opportunity to push it to the limits. No tunings been done.

Oh and I don't have a clue on the last time the pumps been looked at. No diverter. No droop or plate. No inducer. Those are all on my list.

With 600 hours you'll likely find that it's time for a rebuild. Again, I'd recommend finding someone in your area that can help you do the compression and leak down tests. That will give you some good information about what is happening in your engine.

Is the "new" distributor a stock replacement or a quality aftermarket brand? You'll want to get the mechanical advance tuned for your application (performance brands will come with a variety of springs/bushing to set up the advance curve).

If your going to rebuild or replace the engine, it would also be a good time to have someone freshen up the pump (especially with no service history available).

A couple pics. The distributor cap was changed to a new red one but it's an Accel. The headers aren't on because I just recently got the water lines. It has the logs on.

I was pretty sure a rebuild would be needed soon but if I'm going to do that this is where I'm lost with what to do. I've seen top end kits that can be purchased. Cam kits. If I go that route then what to do with the bottom end? Anything? Or should I have someone rebuild what I have with upgraded parts? The kits run 30 or so. I could swing that in the near future. But would it be better to just put that money on just a rebuild. I think the carb may be insufficient. I had questions about what exactly is a full roller. I've read many times that seems to be a preferred set up.

For your application I'd recommend a hydraulic roller cam kit and a good set of roller rockers.

Here are a couple of suggestions

For the amount of hours on the engine I'm going to recommend you go full rebuild (check and bore the block, new pistons, recondition/replace the connecting rods, new cam/valve train and rebuild/replace the cylinder heads.

Might I suggest that you start with a fresh build, that way you don't have any down-time and you end up with a spare engine. Also, it sucks to watch your ride sit while machine work is getting done.

The only kits I've seen recently for $30 are model car kits. Now $300 will get you started for a couple parts kits. And $3000 will get you a mild rebuild if you assemble it yourself. I can keep adding $000 and you can have the fastest open bow on the water, but I don't think that would be necessary.

thanks that helps a lot. How difficult is it to rebuild an engine yourself?

It's not that hard just need to know what. The clearances are have all Machine work done and how to check everything that needs to be checked

To rebuild an engine is very hard! Especially if you have never done one! Don't do it yourself, you will regret it. Have someone do it for you or buy a new motor built to your specs.

Maybe I'll do it once I get another engine. I'd love to do one just for the experience....but probably not be one I'd have to rely on solely.

Don't rebuild your pump, because that has nothing to do with how fast your motor is pushing your boat to begin with....

True, (obviously because of the low RPM he is reaching) but making sure the pump is fresh when he goes back together after the engine overhaul isn't going to hurt anything except his wallet.

Chief Keef, you see these posts just as much as I do, feels like weekly that people want to know this that and the other about why their boat is so slow or what mods or parts would add mph....
I got an idea...dial your shit in!
Make sure your pump is right, how bout a cap and rotor and wires and plugs and a carb rebuild and have have someone who knows what they are doing dial it in.....

My fat hog had a bazillion hours on it with plug wires from 1984 and did 55mph all day.
Faster than I ever thought it'd go.
All I've ever done is kept the pump tight, changed the plugs, oil...

Blah blah blah.....
I'm just rambling.
