Camshaft choices 460

It seems the more I read about Cam's, the more confusing they become. I dont want to buy something I will regret so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Here is what I have (planned)

460 .030 over (externally balaced)
Flat top pistons
Holly 850
D3ve heads mildly ported and blended
stock crank
stock truck rods
SCJ iron manifold (might switch to aluminum if there is benefit)
TT logs and snails
12JC "A" impeller

So here are my questions...

Is there a good off the shelf cam choice for this?
Do I install the double roller sraight up or advanced? (replacing stock nylon gears)
Can I run the stock non adjustable rockers?
Is 450 HP feasible with log manifolds? (I want to keep the back seats)

Cam was my most terrible thing to decide on. It killed me.

What compression ratio you going to be at?

Imho, the logs and snails are going to keep you in the 400hp range.

You could go with something like EMI or even Lightning jacketed headers, keep the cover and bolt on hp.

As for camshaft, hit up Lakes Only or call George at Clay Smith Cams.

With 9.5:1 compression, you could get away with quite a lot of cam, unfortunately, the logs take much of that away.

I called comp cams. They ask all the right questions as far as your set up, impeller, etc. you tell them what you are looking at getting out of it and they will suggest the cams they would recommend. Very easy and quick way to get a little more info.

Thanks guys. I talked to George at Clay Smith as they are down the street from my work. He is a wealth of knowledge. I didn't realize he has always been so involved in the jet boat world. Always thought Mr Horsepower was all Hot Rods and street cars.

He's a pretty sharp dude. When we did the first crate motor in a cubic inch restricted class be did the cam, the thing was a rocket ship.

I have a 460 over 30... 466. Stock crank, ported d3's, scorpion non adj rocker arms, SS valves, forged pistons, RPM intake, 850 dp, unilite dizzy, thru bolt logs... cam is Schneider 284-88h-12. Runs bitchn... Bostick Built.

No-one should recommend a camshaft until every other major engine component has been decided upon and purchased (and not just "planned" or "intended," since this seems to almost always change). A camshaft is the very last major engine component to purchase since if plays such a significant role in making all the other parts work as efficiently to get as possible.

Decide on what your engine build is going to be, purchase all the parts, then consider camshafts.
