Carb Question

Hey All, New to your site. I have searched previous pages trying to answer my own question but no luck. I have a BBC with a Holley that left me stranded in Topock last week. Ran fine from AVI to the bridge then just died. Restarted and ran very rough. Looked down the carb to see mass amounts of fuel pouring in. Pulled the needle and seat tried to clean,reinstalled with same condition. Swapped primary and secondary needles and idled a little better. But trailered it out. Would the excessive fuel be caused by stuck needle or would it be from float level adjustment?  I swapped out the fuel filter also. The carb has two previous trips without problems. Could this just be dirt in the carb or a power valve. It did backfire once prior to this problem.

 You might what to check the sight glass to see fuel level in the bowl float adj could be off,are you have dirt in the needle and seat?

Was the fuel dumping in the carb from the vent tube?

Looked like it was coming from from the side next to the squirters. I picked up two new 110 needle and seats and will try that. Fuel is just at the bottom of the site holes.

Thanks,  Just bought this boat. Trying to work through the last owners problems. I really think that the tanks need to be drained,,better fuel filter installed. Do you recommend a small inline filter between carb and fuel pump as well?

Didn't we have almost the exact same thing happen to the laker boat at Big River? After Crewcheif and Nick spent about 2 hours tearing the carb down and cleaning the mud out of it (How'd THAT get in there), ran like Kobe from a Denver motel room!

BTW, welcome, These guys can figure ANYTHING out!

check your power valves and put in new metering block gaskets, dont over tighten bowls

Will a power valve that is bad be noticeable? What do I need to look for? Are the metering block gaskets similar or are they specific to each size of carb?

4150 carbs are similar, Now you have the carb apart you might as well rebuilt it around $40.00 for the kit good luck.

No, but may as well check 'em while you're there. Gas pouring in the carb not from the vent is usually a leak from the bowl to the booster port or sometimes a vacume break clogged, (tiny air holes near the squirter). Spray carb cleaner in the bleads. Check the body of the carb to see if it's flat where the gasket goes on. Over tightening the bowl screws can draw the outer edges of the body in and make a leak behind gasket

I had one of my carbs backfire and after that it idled really fast. Turned out to be blown power valves.
Once I replaced them, no problems.

Bowrider, about the small inline fuel filter,some people recommend avoiding the plastic ones because
they can become brittle from the sun.   
If you put one on, just make sure it doesn't affect your fuel pressure to the carb.

Thanks Dave, I will change out the power valves as well as change out the needle and seat. Would like to do one at a tme just to try and isolate the problem just for future reference.
Traveling to Rialto tomorrow, may stop in at Eliminator to check out their inventory ;D
