I have a 1978 21ft Hawaiian Jet Boat with an AMC 360 Motor and a Panther pump Jet drive. To be honest the boat has been sitting for several years. Now it's time to get it back in the water. I see that my steering cable is in dire need of replacement.

My question is, HOW DO I REPLACE IT? It looks like I don't have enough room to remove it pulling it into the engine compartment? Is it possible to replace it without removing the motor or pump?

I bought a new Teleflex Rack Mechanical Rack Steering System, and it looks like a pretty easy install except getting it though the transom?

I would appreciate and advice or direction from someone who has done this before.

It's a pain in the a$$ but it can done or at least I was able to get it done in my 18.6 Challenger with a 460 and a Berkeley pump by just removing the interior. Mine in a 1/4 stringer boat I did have to enlarge the hole where the cable went through the seat mounts to gain a little flexibility to get the metal end that attaches to the pump underneath the motor.

I talked with a couple of friends locally who all say the same thing..I'm going to have to either remove the jset drive or pull the motor...just not enough room to position the rod end of the cable through the transom and through the hole in the jet drive base.

So looks like I'm having to pull the jet drive..Not having fun with this!

Well, I ended up taking the Jet Drive off. Followed the instructions from :http://www.americanturbine.com/downloads/pdf/instructions/Panther_Instructions.pdf, for the removal. I did have to cut the shift cable, it was not going to fit through the transom. So now the fun part! Finding a new shift cable, replacing the steering cable and Rack. Then reinstalling the jet drive.

What has become a common phrase in my life, " What could possibly go wrong?"

Apparently, a lot!!
