Rear of engine in tranny mounting locations, 4 spots. Same place most of the bellhousing or flywheel cover bolts to.

I used grade 8 bolts and never once was concerned about it falling and that was with heads and intake.

For some reason my mind was thinking stand not hoist.

I was curious if anyone knows the best place/technique on attaching an engine hoist to a 454.  Where to bolt to?

There are a variety of ways that are safe and easy.  I use straps instead of chain, but either can work.  With a one piece tunnel ram or single plane intake sometimes I put the strap through the intake.  The straps I use are rated for about 2500 lbs.  If there is no exhaust on the heads, I sometimes use 4 3/8" bolts, one at each corner,, or there should also be some 3/8" bolt holes in the end of the threads on the outboard side.  The advantage of using the exhaust is the bolts angle down, less chance the straps can come off.  If you use chain, it's a good idea to use some heavy washers on the bolts.   You can do it one a single piece of chain if necessary,, opposite corners of the engine.

*I* am not a fan of the intake plate mounts for lifting the engine.  the intake was NEVER designed to be a structural part of the engine, sure its thick and u could prolly drive a car over it, but about 600 pounds hanging off of it?  no thanks.

chain over the top with a bolt in the front and the back into the heads.

I have to remove my intake manifold to get the hoist attached low enough so that I can raise the engine high enough to get it over the transom.

No disrespect to ka0tyk but I would recommend removing the carb just to make sure it doesn't get damaged (all it takes is one slip to damage a carb).

true on removing the carb. i was in a hurry though. better safe than sorry.

Removing that dizzy would not be a bad idea when lifting that way also because that outer aluminum casing/housing on them crack easy if a slip occurs.
