Droppin in the engine

So ill be dropping in the engine soon and the boat had a ford in it so the stringers have been doweled and reglassed and I have no clue really what im doin so here's my questions

How deep does the Driveline go on the pump?

What areas on the pump and engine should i use to find my angles?

Should I level (front to back) the engine and lift/lower it to get my 1-1.5 drive line angle?

And any tips or tricks to make this easier

3/8ths from bottom
pan rail and bowl
you get level or straight if you will then get your angle from there, once you get it in it will all make sence (sp?)
if you have a bare block it will be a lot easier and get a 2nd person

edit, there are probably a few different ways to do this, this is just what worked for me

3/8" is good spacing, you don't want the jet putting pressure on the main.

And where on the bowel should I place the angle locator?

And as an example
With the boat being level and the pump reading let's say 5 degrees, I should lift/ lower the engine while keeping it level so that when placing the angle finder on the drive line it will read +/-1 from 5 to find my drive line angle?

Or should the engine be angled to match the pump angle and be in line with the pump shaft then lift/lower to get an exact +/- 1 degree at the drive line?

Or could I go off of leveling the engine from the headers so they are straight and not angled up or down?

use the top of the bowl all other measurments will come from that, so it does not matter if the boat is level, but sure why not leval it via the stringers so you can see what angle the pump is set in. make sure its level left to right as well so the motor is not twisted..

it doesnt matter how you get the angle, raise the front or back of motor, your oil pan will only let you go so far down in the back..
you can put your headers on and step back and see what looks best..

its not that hard, you just have to start doing it and it will all make sense

Well I fucked up somewhere got just under a degree vertically but im about 1/4 off horizontally? Now im pretty sure im pissed. And I didn't drink while doin this.........maybe that's where I went wrong.

Well seems after about 50 measurements the L brackets are drilled crooked so they will be comin off to have the holes welded up then ill straighten it out and re drill.

Glad I decided to put everything together before I spent the time cleaning and polishing.

Well I was up the rest of the night thinking about this, damn my ocd and adhd. The new plan, gonna widen the holes on the rear stringer brackets so see if I can slide the back over, if it works ill tighten it up and add a 3rd hole to keep it from sliding if they come loose. If not, well back to having them welded up

I was waiting for you to come by..........

This is just my fitting time. Gonna put just about everything in minus seats and carpet and then take it apart and clean it up. Most of my stuff is used so nothings pretty. Wanna make sure everything fits and works.

Ever spend 5 hours polishing a foot pedal only to snap a bolt and have to drill and tap it then see that you jacked up all the work you did polishing. :-

Man after reading this I am not looking forward to doing this. I have a few ?s my self?

Whats with the drive line dregree angle? Is 1-1.5 a standard?
Is there a way to set rails in before you have any messurements then make the adjustments with the angle plates that bolt to motor mount and rail?
I would like to set my rails first. Or should i bolt every thing to the motor then drill the stringer holes when its setting in the right location.

stringers are 3/4'' by 5 /12''

Kansas Jet-
An easy way is with a bare block, pan, crank and driveline. I use different shims under the pan for mock-up, 1X4's & 1/2", plywood and smaller if needed for setting height, and right to left, as well as front to rear angle(s). I've also done this with a complete motor (sbc) and it worked well. I went 1/8" up (thin paneling shim) then drilled stringer brackets, and motor "settled down" when the weight was on the mounts, but this was for 4 pt. mounts, not a rail type mounts. An overkill engine hoist helps too.

Pull the logs for access/room
1.5* is what I shoot for, 1/4-3/8" out of the splines.

set rails on the stringers first, then trim the plates to get the angle.. if you dont your rails wont be level with the stringers and look like shit

Ralph,
At what point in stringers should i set the rails. They are 1 x 6 . I think nominal size is 3/4 by 5 1/2''. Just come down half of the 5 1/2 and bolt them in? Also im wnating to use 3'' x 4'' by 1/4'' angle to bolt engine to rail. Will this be string enough? I know they should have a guset but is that over kill. Ive only got 400 HP motor.
