---DYNO---anyone???
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:24:47 AM »
Now that Lake Casitas is closed I have lost my "tuning grounds" and more than ever I am going to need to get the motor all dialed in quickly and right. I have redone everything  Bigger heads, ported, stainless valves, springs, bumped up the compression, studded the mains and heads, dual carb tunnel ram , mallory ignition (6al,mag ign, promaster coil), gear drives, and although I am sure I can get it dialed in (sooner or later) I don't want to spend half the summer working on it with the family standing around waiting. So how do I go about finding a place that can get it dialed in on a dyno, I should have everything pretty close, and I would like to take part in the wrenching and fine tuning, or at least know what changes are made. I am already into the Camping funds trying to get this dam thing out of the builders shop. I don't even know what the basic cost would be just to set it up and run through the process, it might be out of my leauge at this stage of the game, but if it can be done on a budget, this is the place to ask.
SOooo who has a DYNO machine that is reasonable to test on?
I can travel from SLO, to San Diego, So with that in mind who would be the best and most affordable?
Thanks, I know asking a skilled professional to do a budget job sucks, but I am willing to do the chitty parts and leave the fun parts to the guy in charge, and I'll bring cash!!
Thanks,
John

Don't come to Sacramento.  The only Dyno in the area is Rex Hutchenson and he starts at $800.00.  I guess that's one way to keep the kiddies from bugging him to run their Hondas and Toyotas.

Dyno services = spendy, but to me worth it on a decently priced motor.

If you're willing to go to East County there is a REALLY nice Superflow dyno, Jim is the owner's name and is very smart in dialing in or extracting horsepower.

I thought the dyno shop was only a chassis dyno? And when did Ed Hale's shop get a dyno?

Yes all better, I love the 2nd. rear end shot much better, I would ask to see the headlights/grill....but I won't push it  ;D...
(at the rate my engine guy is going) I probably wont have it back by then anyway. I talked to a couple of the shops and I am seriously thinking about getting some new carbs , from what they told me on the phone, 90% of any adjusting they are going to do is going to be in the carb system anyway. Everything elsr is brand new, so the main reason for the dyno was basically to dial in the carbs , but if they are new I can get a jet kit, and play around with it in between pulling the kids around on the tube/ski's. But I will wait reguardless .... I am curious to see the article now.
Thanks Paul

On the dyno there's more than just tuning the carbs. You can play with cam timing, ignition timing, any potential problems, possibly carb spacers if you have them. But unless you're in the market for alot of horsepower it's probably best not to go then.

You could just build an engine stand to start your motor on and tune in in the driveway

I would just rebiuld yer existing carbs. Blow out all passages. Ignition timing under load car make a huge differance. Spacers, air cleaners, etc. Have them dyno it with the air filtration system that you are going to use. AA/Fuel Altereds, AA/Fuel Dragters, AA/Paul. Ive never waivered fromthe nostalga stuff for 20 yrs. Even in high school I was all retro cars and bikes. @ many to list.. 10 plus cars older than 1970, 11 plus choppers and bikes older than 1977.

There is a guy in Burbank who has a tank for you to back your boat into and dyno tune. That way you keep the boat on the trailer, engine in the boat, pump with proper water flow... He's good, I'll try to find his business card, I don't remember the name of the shop.

Another option is Castaic. It's only a few clicks southeast of you. And I'd be happy to meet you out there to provide towing services/company FREE of charge. That's where my old boat was broken in, right there in the marina. Just make sure you've got baffles if you've got headers and water lines running to them.

I will probably go with the Castaic option, and If cant get it dialed then I will go from there, I will have some pics up soon of the motor going together, I am building a deck in trade for the machine work, and my part of the barter will be done tomorrow, he swears up and down the motor will be done when the deck is...But I think I have up against the ropes at this point, My block is sitting on the floor in front of the line boring machine, and the crank is on the floor in front of the balancing machine....... The rods and pistons are balanced ,and  arp rod bolts are pressed in and ready to rock, the heads are done, I have the metal head gaskets for it this time, and the motor will be completely studded  ;D

One reason to go with a roller cam - no break in required. Start and tune.

I am interested in hearing who the the dyno shop is that has a tank....

I'm still working on getting the number, my friend's father used them about 6 years ago. I asked him about it, it's just a water filled pit to back your boat into they strap it all down and have a return for the water being blown through the pump. No dyno, just a convenient place to tune where you can hold it at whatever throttle position while standing still and wrenching.

Yep I will give the olds another summer, if it doesn't hold up then its chevy time. I love how it ran, keeping it that way is starting to get a little pricy.
But there is nothing more satisfying than blowing by a BBC owner, especially when they converted over from an olds I did it a few times last summer and it almost better than sex ;D
