Here's another tip for saving your engine. Accusump. I know after years of being on the river and beating the crap out of my stuff this was one of the things I had to have after building a new engine. I can't remember how many times I was making a pass and looking at my oil pressure gauge drop at the end of the pass. Basicly it is an oil resevoir that opperates when you have a pressure loss in the oiling system. There are two ways to run this a manual system and an electronic system. The electronic one has a pressure switch that when the oil pressure drops below 25 psi it will actuate a soleniod thus restoring oil pressure. The one I have holds three quarts. so the resevoir is basically a hyraulic acumilator?

Yes it works against the engine oil pressure. Positive pressure fills it, Negative discharges it.

no disrespect,but, that is a band aid for a different problem. probably an oil pan issue causing your oil pressure drop

I agree, but how much value does it offer as a pre-lube device for the initial start of the engine when it is cold? I.E. close ball valve while engine oil pressure is say 50psi or so. Then before starting a cold engine release the pressure and 3qts of oil back through the system then crank over with valve shut (this is assuming the system has no leaks) avoiding a "dry start". I have ran this through my head but would it offer much benefit for the cost/hassle of the system?

I've started my truck "dry" every morning and several times a day for 8 years with no bearing damage. Forces present on the bearings at startup are relatively low...and oil pressure comes up fast. They're good for certain applications, but pointless for most.

I have one on my boat not a band aid more like a piece of mind in knowing if I lose oil pressure for any reason it's there for me. Don't really use it for pre oiling.
