Engine keeps shutting off
« on: March 11, 2016, 10:31:57 AM »
Hey guys, I'm stumped here. Took my boat out to Elsinore a couple weeks ago and everything seemed fine after sitting for a couple months. Engine (BBC) starts right up, idled perfectly, and it cruises just fine. However when I give it full throttle after a couple minutes it starts to stutter and just dies as if it were out of gas. I crank it over a couple times and it starts right up again.
Any suggestions on where to troubleshoot first?

Sounds like you're engine is sucking more gas than your fuel system can provide at WOT. So yes, it will idle and cruise fine but won't keep up at WOT. You're running out of gas. Check for clogged filters first then look at your fuel pump.

Fuel filter. Also check for clogged pick-up in the fuel tank(s).

I agree with the above mentioned items, but just check your lines too. One time I had a problem just like this and it drove me nuts. After checking filters and pick ups and carb, come to find out, there was a very small section of my fuel line that got exposed to some oil, so the hose was really soft, so under WOT that section of the hose would collapse and was cutting off the fuel. I felt pretty stupid when I found that little problem!!

What kind of fuel pump do you have, mechanical or electric?

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

You can disconnect the fuel line before the carb, turn the pump on and see how it flows. This might help indicate whether you need to look at the pump/filter or carb.

I have a blue Holley electric pump and have had stuff plug up the screen inside the pump.
You can check the screen by taking the bottom plate off (5 screws) and see the screen and pump parts. I usually spray the pump parts with WD40 to lube them up. Be careful because these parts are just sitting in there and can fall out.
