Engine running hot

Ok
My brother picked up a 94 California cool open bow with a 427 and american turbine jet
We took it out to puddlestone today to test and the temp is jumping from 150 to 210 and it acts like its got a air pocket or a stuck tstat, there is no tstat in it thou,
Hose routing looks correct
Any ideas?

make sure the water valve is open! check a couple of hoses to see if its full of sand?

or the really bad one, head gasket!

Sounds to me like a textbook and filled block.

There is not enough information to answer your question, but a couple of easy tests will find the issue.

How is it plumbed? Pictures are real helpful here..

Is the water leaving the motor really at 150 to 210?

How does it run?

Without knowing what we're looking at they are all guesses.

Its all good guys
Pulled the ball valve out and running its straight, tested at home with the hose first and then went back to puddlestone
And made some rounds, rumning great now, i think either there was a air pocket
Pr the ball valve port was too small, iys a log system so i dont see the need for the valve anyway

For what reason? my hawaiian has never seen a valve, and i have never had a issue in 10 years. Its a log style exhaust on my brothers boat so whats the purpose of the valve?

What are you gonna do when you blow a water hose? That valve will save you from sinking

There are three purposes for the valve off the pump. Just because the engine runs cool and everything seems peachy, there are great chances that is is not...

Reason number 1. It makes the water pressure and volume "adjustable", not all (in fact very few) log style jet boat engines can handle the pressure and volume from the jet pump without being throttled. There is a better than great chance of blowing intake manifold gaskets at the water ports or blowing off a cooling hose, or worse.

Reason number 2. The valve provides a service tool when you drive through some shallow ass water and fill things with silt/sand. You can close off the water valve and reroute the water flow to blow the crap out without leaving the lake/river.... Done this one a bunch of times.

I had a Tahiti with log style exhaust never had a damn Gate Valve

Had pump to Tee into motor out T-Stat housing into & out log exhaust no throttle valve at all. that motor lasted till last year it was 35 years old

My buddy had a Southwind with log exhaust with a gate valve off the pump but it was wide open

I agree if would save you if you were sinking (Or stay outta shallow water and dont run over your ski rope) but where the hell are you guys driving your boats through all this sand and shit u speak of. I'm in lakes with relatively warm water and not driving over shallow stuff or rocks.

and a gate is not the best tool to control water pressure thats all I will say and I'll leave it alone.

I'm gonna start making gate valves and selling them to you guys

Sand and silt is a very real and big problem when you run a jet boat where they are designed to run. Any fast moving water has a ton of free flowing, very fine sand, and as long as the engine is running, acts like a huge vacuum and sucks up tons of the loose material.

If you make a gate valve made in the USA for a reasonable price that has a way to lock the position and has indexing marks for percent open, I would be all over it...

And just for reference, not all jet pumps produce the same amount of flow and pressure, the amount of HP typically determines how much pressure and volume they are capable of, but sometimes it is the pump itself.

Not trying to start a pissing war, just trying to keep the facts floating on the top.

Also, the fact that you had a boat run for X number of years without a valve don't mean Squanto. I call it blind luck. JMHO

There should be a full port valve immediately after the water outlet of the pump.

I'm sure it was luck it was a mild big block

I totally agree about the pump being a huge vacuum I take for granted I drive only in deep lakes.

I am just wondering why wouldnt these boats have the valve already...
