Engine stand fell over!

Well I just got my engine back from the machinist. Completely rebuilt I put it on my cheap 3 leg engine stand to put the oil pan on...after getting the pan on I went to turn the engine over again and the whole stand fell over. I ended up putting it in the boat anyway.

From what I can tell it looks like it only bent one rocker arm stud. The engine landed completely upside down so the only damage should be on the top end.

Any thought on what to do or what else to check out? Thanks

Man, that really sucks, I can't say that I have ever had this happen to me or herd of it. Bet you will never trust a cheap engine stand ever again. I take it the valve covers were not installed yet?, I'd pull any rocker arms off that have any sort of witness mark from inpact and inspect the rocker stud, guide plate and pushrod, plus give a good visual inspection to see if any retainer/valve took a hit. To be honest there could be unforseen damage that you will never see, that whole senario would make me really sketchy. Worse case there could be a bent valve stem that would hang up in the guide and possibly cause the valve head to contact a piston, but I really don't want to scare you. I guess all you can do for now since you said you already installed the engine is give everything your best eyeball, prime it and fire it up to go through the normal break in procedure and see if all is normal....Best of luck... :thumbup:

Thats exactly what I'm thinking. I thought about yanking the heads but I'm probably not going to. I've checked for marks all over the heads and valve train. Looks like only 3 rockers studs got hit hard and one bent. I'll take all three out and replace them just to be sure.

my cheapy harbor freight stand looks like its one ounce away from breaking if i put my motor + exhaust on it.  the thing is super sketchy bending and makes weird creaking noises.  but so far no issues.  sucks man... hopefully nothing more was damaged...

Check the push rods and guideplates to see if any are bent.  Check the stud bosses for cracks, it takes a lot to bend those studs.  What took the impact, the rockers? Head? Intake?

If you really don't want to pull it down, at least rotate it by hand, looking AND feeling for any binding or anything that just doesn't look/feel right.  If you find any sticking, find it and fix it!  It will not "wear in".

Sorry that happened.  Building an engine is a stressful time and setbacks like this will test your patience.

that sucks, i had a Harbor Freight one also, i even put grade 8 hardware in it and still flimsy.  I got rid of it, thats one thing i guess its better to spend a bit more money and get a good one.

That's really crappy! I had two motors on engine stands a few months back. I had one motor on a  really good gusseted stand, and another motor on a buddy's harbor freight stand when we had that pretty solid earthquake... I was watching the motor on the hf stand bounce up and down like crazy.. Thought the damn thing was going to fold right up. The other stand didn't even move during the whole thing. That was a stressful situation and I won't ever buy a stand from those guys.

As I always tell people, you get what you pay for, Harbor Freight is ok for duct tape and tarps, you have to remember everything in that store is made in China. As far as I'm concerned the only good things out of China is rubber dog shit and snakes...LOL
