it is a resistor to bring the voltage down going from the coil into the distributor.

NAPA has them...

Which coil is that?  I bought a Mallory coil that wasn't suppose to need a resistor and it fried.  That reminds me, I need to send that back for replacement.

Which coil is that?  I bought a Mallory coil that wasn't suppose to need a resistor and it fried.  That reminds me, I need to send that back for replacement.

It's called an internally resisted coil and if you use an internally resisted coil with a ballast resistor, if it will start it will burn up due to the additional heat generated...

Nope it burned up with out the external coil.  I had heard from Mallory that they had trouble with this coil.
