BBC 454.. Dying under load after idle????

What's up guys? Have a 1990's 19ft Eliminator with a BBC 454.. Took the boat out a couple of weeks ago and it was cutting in and out at high rpm's. Noticed the power wire on the fuel tank seperator valve was loose and when I went to tighten it the threads broke. Anyway put a new one on but as I suspected the problems still there but worse now. Will start up and idle but when giving it any gas it just backfires and dies. Put a Holley 750 on not too long ago and cleaned it just last week. Kind of lost as where to look to now.. Possibly points gap on distributor is out of whack? Any suggestions?? Need to get her going before we head to Parker Thursday!!

Have you checked your float levels or to see if the carb is squirting fuel?

I did check that earlier and fuel trickled out as it should. However, did pull the plugs and they did look a little soaked so I'm not sure.. Gonna check the point gap tomorrow, hopefully that does it

Check fuel pressure?
What type of ign. Set up?
Driveline spin freely?
Checked plugs/wires?
Old fuel?

Just thinking out loud here.

Fuel pressure is good, plugs and wires good, there was a small amount of older fuel when I bought the boat but have ran over 15 gallons in each since, haven't checked driveline

I'm kinda leaning towards something electrical ign, coil, dizzy, bad ground, timing.

What kind of fuel pump?

Is it super smooth up until it cuts out? Or is it rough until it dies?

Same here. Sounds pretty healthy when fired up and idling then as soon you touch the gas pedal it coughs and dies. It's got a manual fuel pump on it

if it's the same older fuel pump as stated . I would change it out just for piece of mind , JMO

How much fuel comes out when you hit the throttle. Frankly if it starts up easily then it's not ignition, it's fuel. I'd say one of a few different things.

1 float levels off

2 vacuum leak

3 carp under the needle and seat so dual is just pouring in

4 accelerator pump not working.

Boat did not want to start this afternoon at all. Just adjusted the points gap and it fired right up and sounded healthy. Gonna run down to the lake and test it out

Nice hopfully that was your problem. Best thing i ever did was get a pertronix module thing that eliminates the points in my distributor Id look into that
