I broke a high torque starter on my Southwind yesterday. I believe its because I am missing a few teeth in my flexplate. The starter was stuck on and spinning freely (the pinion wasnt even moving). I had to pull the battery to kill it. The Ignition key didnt turn it off.

So here lays the dumb question but figured it would make for good SCJB tech talk.....I'd like to replace the flexplate. Is it as simple as just buying one and replacing it? or do i have to rebalance everything? I figured I'd ask before I destroy another motor or starter for that matter.

I would think as long as you buy the same style flex plate you should be good. Some engines are internally balanced and some externally.

The funny thing is I got this high torque starter new in a lot of parts when i picked up that tahiti awhile back from hava-al. It was new, maybe got used 10 trips max. now its busted.

The starter I put back in the boat is the ORIGINAL starter that came on the boat when purchased in 1978. It might weigh 50lbs, but it still works.

Is your motor internally balanced? If it is you have to buy a neutral balance flexplate.

ok, so how can you tell if its externally or internally balanced on a chevy?

yyyup. 

30 mins pull the motor, 15 mins swap out the flexplate, 30 mins to install the motor
Done before dark.

counted no less than 4 flexplates in the shop, but the fuel from BHC 2 LV is scheduled for parker ($130) 

$30 bar tab? thats about an hour...
