Hey All,

I'm new here.. so please go easy on me.. I just bought my first jetboat. It's a 22ft Hawaiian with a 460 in it. I am having a lot of problems with it. I had it out to Havasu a few weeks ago, and couldn't get it started, killed the battery trying to get it started . Put a new battery in it, and noticed the choke was disconnected. I plugged the wire in, and it started right up, and ran for about an hour then crapped out. It then required a squirt or two of quick start to get it running. When I can get it running now, I have to keep my foot on the gas, it won't idle. It runs incredibly rough and shakes badly for a few seconds then shuts off if I let it idle. (When I had it running at Havasu it ran really smooth, and idled really well before the "crap out".) I took the carb off, and cleaned it. The previous owner decided to stack a bunch of gaskets, and thin aluminum spacers to make a 1/2" thick or so spacer, which I replaced with a 1" spacer from Pepboys. The carb is an Edelbrock 1410 marine carb.

My questions are.. Is the 1410 and a 1" spacer a good setup for a pretty much stock 460? A few things I've read say a 600cfm or 650cfm would be better than a 750cfm for what I have. One mech at a marine shop told me that he does not use the choke, and wires them "hot" or something.. does that sound right? Also, if I decide to get a new carb can I use a non-marine carb, or will I be looking at a lot of problems.

Have you replaced the fuel filter?

Is the gas tank clean and are you using fresh fuel?

Yeah, the filter is new, gas is fresh. There is plenty of fuel getting to the carb as far as I can tell. I'm not sure beyond that point. I haven't seen anything getting trapped in the filter yet. When you say fuel filter.. do you mean an inline filter, or is there another one somewhere that i may want to check as well?

750 is o.k., but an 850 would be better..., a marine carb is best

Thanks for all the input on this guys! I'm going to stick with the 750 for now, maybe go bigger once I get it running smooth etc. I found that the accelerator pump seal had a small crack/tear in it. So I'm hoping that is where the big part of the problem is coming from. Everything else in the carb looks okay, and the floats are swinging without any hangups. I also seem to be having some ignition problems... So I'm going to replace all of that stuff as it is really old and rusty.
