Ford ignition upgrade
« on: March 30, 2014, 05:03:05 PM »
I've been wanting to get rid of the old points and coil to an updated electronic ignition.  I have a 460. I was reading about hei distributor, not crazy about the looks but very simple and inexpensive. What's everyone s thoughts on what's best and should I only get a marine type? The engine is exposed

Look at this on eBay:
FORD 351 351C 429 460 CLEVELAND HEI DISTRIBUTOR 6506-R
http://bit.ly/18HFwiN

This is one I purchased, and too it to some guy that did something to it. And it's ran for a season and a half without any issues.

That's a great price. If you go that direction you will need to get rid of the vacuum advance and go to lighter springs on the weights.

I don't have vacuum advance now so what springs would I have to use?

I would be careful on that dizzy sometimes those cheap ones have like a keyway holdig the shaft to the gear end kind of like a flathead fits to a screw. Kinda junky be careful a good proven part is worth more than getting stuck or destroying an engine

I did the MSD ready to run dissy for my 460, it has been trouble free and the boat runs great. The MSD also fits with a tunnel ram if you have or might get one, the HEI's will not.
